Perfect Day!

June 27th vs Chicago Cubs

"Excited by the imminent arrival of countryman Freddy Garcia, Mags whips up a big pot of beans and rice to bring with him to the Metrodome."

Short Take: Sox pride and Sox offense out in full force

In a way, many Sox fans are glad the 3 game set against the Cubs at US Cellular Field is over. The Northside chokers and their legions of blue-wearing, chardonnay-swilling, cell-phone-toting obnoxious fans head back up to the stinky old beer garden on the North Side. The Sox send 'em packing in grand style with a 9-4 thumping. Hey Chub fans...don't let the turnstile hit you on the way out!

Estaban Loaiza was on the bump for the Sox today, still looking to shake off the inconsistencies and tendency toward big innings that have plagued his past couple of starts. After retiring the first 3 Cubs in order and staked to a 2-0 lead, Loaiza gets roughed up by the Cubs the next 2 innings. After walking the first two batters he faced in the 2nd (luckily Corey Patterson was mowed down trying to steal second), Esty faced the hated Sammy Sosa, who promptly drills his second pitch into the ivy on the second tier of the fan deck, sending Cub fans into a near tizzy as their steroid-laden champion bunny hops and circles the bases. Sosa would belt another 2 run shot in his next at bat the following inning, but after that Loaiza settles down and goes on to work 6 plus innings for the win. Cliff Politte (yes, that Cliff Politte) has his first solid relief outing in a while and keeps the Cubs off the bases and off the board, before Damaso Marte locks down the win with a 1-2-3 ninth.

Loaiza's counterpart Greg Maddux is considered by many of the Cub faithful to be part of their holy trinity along with Kerry Wood and Mark Prior. Today though, Sox hitters feasted on Maddux's soft tosses, turning a highly anticipated matchup into little more than batting practice. Paul Konerko gets this humble correspondent's vote for 2004 Cub Killer after owning Cub pitching all weekend, opening the scoring in the first with a 2 run single scoring Aaron Rowand and Frank Thomas. Miguel Olivo pulls his best Roy Hobbs impression in his last appearance in Sox pinstripes with a solo shot in the second to put the Sox back out in front. Konerko adds a sac fly to score Carlos Lee in the third and Timo Perez follows with a 2 run home run to put the Sox ahead for good. In addition to his dinger, Olivo also rips a ball past Aramis Ramirez that turns out to be a 2 base error which scores two runs. By the time he was due for his next at-bat, Kenny Williams was telling him he'd been traded to Seattle as part of the Freddy Garcia deal.

The Sox have an off day tomorrow before heading north to Minnesota for a 3 game set with the Twinkies at the Metrodome. After losing today, the Twins hold a slim one game lead over our Sox...with this series shaping up to be the most pivotal of the season right now. Mark Buehrle squares off against Carlos Silva Tuesday night. We've pummeled this guy before, lets go ahead and do it again!

Ozzieball Update:
Ozzieball plays a key part in the Sox win this afternoon. Steals by Aaron Rowand and Willie Harris both translate to runs scored.
