Short Take: Big inning scuttles Sox efforts

This is it, Sox fans. The moment most of us have been anticipating since the beginning of the season. The fuzzy blue Northside Bears, led by Sneezin' Sammy and Prior the Messiah, make the trip down into enemy territory for a 3 game set against our beloved Sox. Much to the dismay of the Sox Army that packed the house at US Cellular this afternoon on a gorgeous day for baseball, our boys come up on the short end, losing 7-4. If not for one troublesome inning full of blunders, the Sox could very easily have walked away with this game.

As has been the case for the past 3 seasons, Jon Garland has been a model of inconsistency. Coaches, the press and Sox fans have all been imploring him to turn that magical corner and develop the poise needed to be a truly effective major league pitcher. Much as he did for 8 innings Sunday, Jon showed today that he's got plenty of good stuff in him, stifling the supposedly vaunted Cubs offense for 4 innings. The Sox managed to tally one run by that point against Mark Prior and the game looked to be cruising right along as a classic pitcher's duel. But trouble lurked in the top of the 5th frame. Todd Hollandsworth and his golden mullet led the inning off with a single. With Garland trying to hold him close at first, he throws the ball away and Hollandsworth hustles over to 3rd. A weak Michael Barrett grounder promptly scores Hollandsworth to tie the game. Corey Patterson follows Barrett and reaches second on a Juan Uribe error. Garland, by now slightly rattled, walks Ramon Martinez and then gives up a 3 run blast to Mark Grudzielanek before getting out of the inning. Big Jon gives up another 2 runs in the following frame to Hollandsworth and Barrett again. Neal Cotts comes on relief and holds the Cubs at the Sox a chance to claw their way back, and then Mike Jackson comes on for the 9th and holds the Cubs at bay, but not until after he gives up his obligatory home run.

Good news today? The Sox offense didn't get shut down. Bad news? They didn't exactly light up the scoreboard either. Their lone run early on came on a Mark Prior wild pitch, and they squandered excellent scoring opportunities in the 1st and 7th innings. Finally, Paul Konerko provides some offense with men on base, blasting a 3 run homer to his favorite spot in the left field bleachers to bring the Sox to within 2. Jamie Burke doubles and Joe Crede steps in as the tying run, but fans to end the inning. In the 9th, Ozzie summons Willie Harris and Timo Perez from the bench hoping to get some speed aboard, but it's all for naught.

Game 2 of Chicago's Civil War is set for 3:05 CDT tomorrow. With Scotte Schoeneweis on the 15 day DL, Felix Diaz and his 11+ ERA face off against Carlos Zambrano

Ozzieball Update:
Carlos Lee walks, swipes 2nd and scores on a wild pitch in the 4th to account for the game's 1st run.
