Cleveland Rocks Sox Pitching

June 23rd vs Cleveland

Magglio Watch
Days left on the DL:
Number of special newspaper articles covering it:

"Still a few days away from returning due to pain when he runs, Magglio picked up a ball and started working on a cutter today, hoping to contribute to the Sox weak bullpen.."

Short Take:  Sox pitching falters again as the Indians outslug the Sox.

With the pitching staff in the midst of their biggest struggles of the year, the Sox sent Mark Buehrle to the mound Wednesday. Buehrle, coming off one of his worst starts of the year against Montreal, has been the beneficiary of 9 runs of support from the offense throughout the year. But he needed at least that many on this night to have a chance to win.

The Sox scratched across first in the 2nd inning thanks to the Sox starting right fielder in this game - Jamie Burke!? Carlos Lee led off the inning with a base hit and advanced to second on a Jose Valentin walk. With 2 outs, Burke singled to center to drive in Lee and give the Sox a 1-0 lead. But as was the story in this game, the Sox simply couldn’t hold the Indians down. After retiring the first hitter in the 3rd inning, Buehrle surrendered a solo home run to Ron Belliard to tie the game. In the 4th inning, the leadoff walk hurt Buehrle when Travis Hafner singled to drive in Victor Martinez. Buehrle allowed another run in the 5th inning to put the Sox down 3-1. Aaron Rowand hit a solo homer in the bottom half of the inning to close the gap to one, but the Sox couldn’t tie the game.

Two homers in the 6th inning off of Buehrle pushed the Indians lead back to 5-2 as the Sox looked helpless. Paul Konerko’s first solo homer helped give Sox fans a little more optimism. In the 7th inning, Sox fans had reason to believe the Sox would come back. With 2 outs, Frank Thomas flew out to left center but the ball fell when CoCo Crisp and Matt Lawton collided. The Sox looked to really take advantage of the error when Carlos Lee crushed a line drive shot to left field. The ball seemed to be a 2-run home run. But as Sox fans celebrated what they believed was a tie game, the umpire was calling the ball in play. Lee was thrown out at 2nd as he assumed the ball was a home run and did not run hard. Thomas scored from 2nd, but that only cut the deficit to 5-4. That was the last chance the Sox had. In the 8th inning Buehrle walked the bases loaded before Ozzie Guillen went to the bullpen for Mike Jackson. The move couldn’t have backfired more as Jackson’s first pitch was crushed to right field for a Ben Broussard Grand Slam. Konerko hit his 2nd homer of the game in the bottom half of the 8th, but that was all the Sox could get as they lost the game 9-5.

The Sox look to salvage a split of the 4 game series before the weekends series against the Cubs. Jon Rauch will get his 2nd shot at the Sox 5th starter spot and face off against Jake Westbrook. Game time is scheduled for 1:05 CDT.

Ozzieball Update:
This is becoming more like The Tinkerer's Update. Jamie Burke starts in right field. Ozzieball makes little difference when the pitchers can't record outs.

Paul Konerko

Two home runs in the game, though it didn't make much of a difference.
