Sox Show Up Seattle!

June 4th vs Seattle

Today's Free Agency Value:
"Day 1 of Maggs' time on the DL. Let the Magglio Watch begin."

Short Take: Sox shake off Safeco jinx

Over the past few years, Safeco Field has not been kind to the White Sox, or their fans. For many of us, the memories of Kelly Wunsch pounding the mound after the Sox meltdown in the 2000 playoffs is all-too-fresh in our collective minds. Since that dreadful day, the Sox are 4-11 in trips to the Emerald City. But with the Mariners struggling and scuffling thus far this year, the Sox breeze into town like the ever-present Seattle rain and walk away wirh a 4-2 victory in the first game of their 3 game set with the Mariners.

Is Jon Garland finally for real? Is he finally turning the corner that he's been just on the verge of for the past 3 years? Is it kinda funny that a guy named Garland pitched magically in a city nicknamed the Emerald City? Looks like the answer to all three of those questions is a resounding yes. Garland works 7 1/3 innings and gives up just 4 hits, dropping his ERA to 3.79 and improving his record to 5-2. The Mariners' lone run off Garland comes off an Ichiro Suzuki single in the 3rd. Perhaps most notable for Garland though is that he only gave up one lonely walk, showing that the control problems which so often used to plague him just might be fading away. Damaso Marte and Billy Koch are solid in relief, even with a Marte wild pitch and Koch giving up a single to start the 9th which resulted in the runner getting to 3rd base. Koch faced former World Series clucth hero Scott Spezio with the pressure on in the 9th and forced him to pop out to end the game, nailing down Wild Billy's 8th save of the season.

Even though they only scored 4 runs tonight, the Sox offensive theme was straight out of Little League...everybody hits. (well, everybody hits but little Joey). Facing their possible future teammate Freddy Garcia (who fanned 6, walked 2 and gave up all 4 Sox runs), the Sox offense got the hits when they needed to. Juan Uribe doubled in the 4th inning, and Frank Thomas brought him home on a blast to the Sox bullpen in left center field. In the 7th, Jose Valentin (who only fanned twice tonight) scores on a Timo Perez single. One inning later, Carlos Lee extends his hitting streak to 20 games, doubling in Willie Harris.

Game 2 against the Mariners is at 3:05 CDT tomorrow, with Scott Schoeneweis taking on Ryan Franklin.

Ozzieball Update:
Doubles and longballs aren't exactly Ozzieball...but runs are still runs.
