WSI News - Totally Biased Game Recaps

Nothin' from Neal

May 22, at Minnesota

Today's Free Agency Value:
"Only went 2-4 with a pair of singles, but doesn't lose any value because only one of two Sox players to get on base twice."

Short Take: Cotts struggles in first start; Brad Radke shuts down Sox offense.

Before Neal Cotts took the mound for his first start of the year, Ozzie Guillen, Don Cooper, and more Sox brass mentioned that Neal would not be stretched and that the Sox would only need a few strong innings from him before turning things over to the bullpen. Unfortunately, Cotts struck out in his first effort to cement himself into the rotation, struggling over 2 1/3 innings, allowing 5 hits, 4 runs (all earned), while walking one and striking out another.

Unfortunately some games just arenít meant to be won and this one clearly qualifies. Trouble started in the first inning when Lew Ford and Christian Guzman opened the game with back-to-back singles and then moved to first and third on a wild pitch. Jacque Jones drove in Ford with a ground out before Matt LeCroy took Cotts deep, just over the left field wall.

The three-run lead would prove to be all Brad Radke would need as the Sox continued their Jekyll and Hyde act, juggling massive offensive explosions with anemic performances. The Sox dig get one run back in the second when Joe Crede doubled Jose Valentin home, but they would never get closer. Justin Morneau homered off Cotts in the bottom half or the frame to make it a 4-1 lead. The Sox, meanwhile, managed a robust four hits the rest of the way, and only put multiple runners on base once the entire game in the last 7 frames; in the fourth when Carlos Lee and Jose Valentin had back-to-back singles with an out, but neither would advance further.

To add to the list of woes, the bullpen was shaky at times relieving for Cotts. Mike Jackson had a solid, scoreless 2 1/3 innings, only allowing two hits and Damaso Marte finally looked effective, but Jon Adkins and Cliff Politte both struggled and Kelly Wunsch was less than spectacular in his brief appearance. Adkins and Politte pitched a combined inning and two-thirds but also combined to allow 6 hits and 5 runs.

The loss drops the Sox back to a game behind the Twins in the Central and snaps their 4-game win streak. The same two hook up tomorrow for the finale of their 4-game set. Jon Garland goes to the mound against Johan Santana. Game time is 1:10 PM Central and will be aired on Fox Sports Net.

Ozzieball Update:
When you manage 7 hits and 1 run, there isn't much else to comment on offensively.
