Rainy Mayhem

May 17th at Cleveland

Today's Free Agency Value:
"Reached base twice. Unfortunately he can't bat for the whole team."

Short Take:  Not much going right in this 7-2 loss...

The White Sox and Indians waited out two rain delays on Monday. As it turns out, itís too bad they even got the game started, though some might argue that the Sox still havenít actually started the game. The game started an hour and a half late due to the weather, and Felix Diaz started even later for the Sox. Diaz was nothing short of lousy for the Sox as he allowed 6 runs in only 4 and 1/3 innings. Diaz struggled with his control and walked three batters while striking out two. By the time the second rain delay hit in the bottom of the 5th inning, the Sox chances looked bleak in a 5-1 game. But just in case there were any Sox fans who anxiously awaited the games resumption in hopes of a comeback win, Mike Jackson quickly eliminated those hopes when the game resumed play. After relieving Diaz following a 34 minute rain delay, Jackson proceeded to allow consecutive hits to score two more runs and put the game further out of reach at 7-1. The pitching wasnít there, the hitting wasnít there, the defense wasnít there. At least they were consistently bad in all areas in this game.

The game started off well for the Sox. Coming off a big offensive game Sunday, the Sox jumped out of the gate quickly as they took the lead and looked to give Diaz a little room for comfort. With one out in the top of the 1st, Aaron Rowand and Magglio Ordonez reached base on singles for a first and third situation. Frank Thomas checked his swing but could not avoid contact and hit a weak grounder down the first base line. Not the prettiest of swings or the best result, but it got the job done and brought a run in to give the Sox the 1-0 lead which Diaz quickly relinquished. In the bottom half of the inning Diaz allowed a leadoff single to Matt Lawton. Lawton then when to second base when Miguel Olivo threw the ball into right field on a snap throw to first. As it turns out, Lawton would have made second easily when the next batter, Omar Vizquel, singled as well. After retiring Jody Gerut, Diaz allowed a double to Victor Martinez and a single to Travis Hafner to give the Injuns a 3-1 lead from which they wouldnít look back.

Diaz wasnít much better in the 2nd either when he walked the first two batters. After a foul out and a ground out which moved the runners, a Victor Martinez single put two more runners across the plate. The Sox meanwhile were shut down by Injuns started Cliff Lee. The Sox had a brief threat in the 3rd inning when Ordonez and Thomas walked with 2 outs. But Carlos Lee could not capitalize on the situation as he proceeded to fly out. The Sox didnít have another serious threat in the game. The only other Sox run came in the 8th inning when Ross Gload, pinch hitting for Ordonez, homered to right field for the Sox second run. Cliff Politte and Billy Koch also pitched an inning of relief each for the Sox. They both allowed two one out singles before getting out of the jam. Not a good effort for the Sox in any aspect of the game as the Sox also committed 3 errors in this game.

The Sox will try to turn things round tomorrow and pick up their first win of this series against Chad Durbin (3-3 11.77 ERA). Jon Garland (2-2 3.97 ERA) will throw for the Sox in the 6:05 CDT start.

Ozzieball Update:
Forget Ozzieball. It would have been nice just to see some more hits tonight.
