Swept Away, Eh?

May 9th vs Toronto

Today's Free Agency Value:
"0 for 3 with a walk, wrapping up an uninspired road trip."

Short Take: Blown Away By Blue Jays

Let's face it Sox fans, Toronot's Skydome, considered by many 10 years ago to be the 8th wonder of the world, is now a pretty much uninspired place. So it's no surprise that the White Sox chose this mausoleum north of the border to play by far their most unspired baseball thus far this season. The suddenly surging Blue Jays knock off the suddenly slumping White Sox 5-2, completing the weekend sweep and sending the Sox back to Chicago with a 2-4 record on their East Coast swing.

Last year, Estaban Loaiza had something to prove when he faced off against his former mates from Toronto. Loaiza turned in 2 of his best outings of the 2003 season against the team that sent him to the scrap heap. Taking the hill today, Estaban was just looking to prove to Sox fans that he hasn't lost the touch that made him a 21 game winner last year. The Mexican righty goes the distance today with a decent outing, but eats the loss thanks to a complete lack of support from the slumbering Sox offense. Loaiza scattered 9 hits over the course of the game and struck out 3 while walking 2. One major gripe Sox fans have had with Estaban thus far this year is his penchant for giving up the gopher ball..and sure enough, he surrendered another one today to Frank Catalanotto, who seems to get a hit in every at-bat versus Sox pitching.

As has been the case for the whole series, the Sox offense was pretty much nonexistent today. The team's 2 runs came off a solid Frank Thomas drive that would have been a grand slam if it were 2 feet higher. After a hot start, Paul Konerko looks to have reverted right back to his 2003 form , going 0 for 4 at the plate today (and 1 for 18 in the series) with 3 strikeouts and the ever-present GIDP, dropping his average to .240. Is the sun finally starting to shine on Carlos Lee? El Caballo tallied 2 hits in today's losing effort, but lack of clutch hitting left him stranded on the basepaths both times. Willie Harris continues his off-again, on again ways with a 3 hit afternoon...when will the real Wee Willie please stand up?

The Sox return to Chicago for an off day Monday followed by a 3 game set against the Baltimore Orioles. Mark Buehrle looks for a quality outing against Sir Sidney Ponson.

Ozzieball Update:
Smallball only works if you hit the ball away from the infielders. Ugly afternoon.
