Sloppy Sox!

April 27th vs Cleveland

Today's Free Agency Value:
"2 for 6? Lots of at bats, but so-so production."

Short Take: Troublesome Tribe Tests Sox Bullpen

The Chicago White Sox started tonight's 2 game set with the Cleveland Indians with plenty of momentum. A series win against the Devil Rays combined with a couple "moral victories" against the Yankees (combined of course with an actual win) had the Pale Hose faithful thinking that a quick sweep of the hapless Tribe would be a piece of cake. Sorry folks, but that's not the case..Sox drop the first game of the short set 11-7. The Sox extra inning loss, combined with a Twins extra inning win, drops our beloved South Siders 1.5 games back in the AL Central.

Early on, this game had all the makings of a full-out slugfest. The Sox offense jumps all over Indians slug Jeff D'Amico with 3 first inning long balls, courtesy of Magglio Ordonez, Frank Thomas, and the resurgent Paul Konerko. Witha 4-0 lead...who would have thought things could go wrong? Cleveland stries back in the next frame with their version of smallball to pull within one run. The rest of the game would prove to be a see-saw affair with both teams scoring runs when needed, but the Indians scoring runs when it counted. All in all, the Sox did manage to bang out 16 hits on the night, but only manage to bring 7 runs home. How's that for frustration? Ordonez, Thomas, Carlos Lee and Joe Crede all walk away with multiple hit efforts, but it just wasn't enough to get the job done. With 2 men on in the 10th inning, the Sox went down with a popout and a whimper...and that's all that really matters.

Jon Garland turns in another so-so start tonight, continuing his career-long trend of hits and misses, leaving the game with a 1-run lead in spite of giving up 10 hits. Big Jon looked impressive early on, unjamming himself from a 2-on, no-out situation in the first inning, and seemed to get more efficient as the night dragged on. But the normally dependable Cliff Politte and Damaso Marte find a way to let the Tribe right back into the game, and then allow Billy Koch and Jon Adkins to figure out a way to blow it. Adkins ends up eating the extra-inning loss, allowing Cleveland hitters to slap him around and give Cleveland a 4-run edge in the 10th, putting the game out of reach.

The Sox and Tribe button up their first series of the year tomorrow afternoon with a 1:05 start. Scott Schoeneweis looks for his 3rd win of the young season against Jason Davis.

Ozzieball Update:
Not much smallball tonight...longbals sure looked nice early, but swinging fir the fences late costs the Sox a win.
