Jolly Good Scho, Mates!

April 22nd vs New York

Today's Free Agency Value:
"So-so at the plate with a 1 for 3, 1 RBI performance, but I turned on the afterburners to keep A-Rod from stroking a double."

Short Take: Sox foil Bronx Bombers' brooms!

With the weather in Chicago running hot and cold for the past few days, it's kinda fitting that the White Sox performance has been pretty much the same. Tuesday featured generally dreadful pitching but oodles of offense, while Wednesday's lack of offense put a great outing by Jon Garland to waste. Tonight's series finale featured a little timely hitting and a whole lot of great pitching. When you add the two together, you walk away with a White Sox winner. The Sox beat the Yankees in their last regular-season meeting of the year, avoiding a sweep and putting a quick end to their 2 game losing streak.

Scott Schoeneweis turns in yet another soling outing, proving that just maybe he can make it as a starter after all. Where are your clever nicknames now, Scho's foes? Big Scott works 6 2/3 innings, surrendering 3 runs on just 4 mealy hits by the oh-so-feared Yankees offense. The only inning where he really had any trouble was the 3rd, and after giving up 2 runs, he worked his way out of the jam to retire the top of the Yankees' order. Cliff Politte has another solid outing in relief, proving that he may be the go-to setup guy out of the pen this season, retiring both lefties and righties with equal aplomb. With 2 men on in the 7th, Cliff gets Derek Jeter off to a quick 0-2 count, falls behind to 3-2 and then induces a groundout to end the Yankees threat. Is he ready to be "Clutchman Cliff" yet? Damaso Marte comes on for the 9th and gives up 2 hits, but closes out the game by forcing Tony Clark to ground into a double play. Sox pitchers induced 3 DPs on the night, and were also helped by Web Gem-caliber plays in the field from Timo Perez and Magglio Ordonez.

The Pale Hose machine pounds out 9 hits tonight, using the perfect blend of small balls and a longball to pick up the win. Willie Harris walked to lead the game and found his way home on a Magglio Ordonez groundout. 2 batters later, Ross Gload strokes a double to deep center scoring Paul Konerko and Carlos Lee. Joe Crede adds a solo home run in the 6th to provide some needed insurance. Only Sox batter to not reach base at all tonight was Timo Perez, but his hustle in the outfield made up for it. Yankees offense got almost all their production out of the bottom of the order, as Messrs. Rodriguez, Jeter, Williams and Sheffield end up a combined 1 for 15 on the night.

Lou Pinella's Devil Rays leave the Florida sun behind for a 3 game set at US Cellular. Estaban Loaiza gets the start for the Sox against Victor Zambrano. We beat him last weekend...let's do it again!

Ozzieball Update:
Today's equation: Textbook display of Ozzieball in the first. Harris walks, swipes second. Perez moves him over to third and Magglio grounds him home. Offense reloads with a Lee single, steal of second, a Konerko walk and a Gload double knocks 'em both home.
