WSI News - Totally Biased Game Recaps

Wildly Effective!

April 9th at New York

Today's Free Agency Value:
"5 RBI and a dinger? Make sure that raise hits my check by tax day."

Short Take: Garland's lucky ugly day

Heading into the second game of their 4 game set with the New York Yankees, Sox fans were gnawing at their nails fretting about whether or not the squad could get it done against the mighty Bronx Bombers after Thursday's anemic loss. Playing in Yankee Stadium is never an easy task, and with George Steinbrenner's personal posse of pinstriped all stars on the field, winning can be downright impossible. The near impossible mission is accomplished by our beloved squad today though, as the Sox walk away with a 9-3 win. Jon Garland gets the start for the Sox today and he walks away with one of the strangest stat lines ever--1 ER on 4 hits with 7 BB. If this were 2003, Ol' Tinkeroo Manuel would have had Jon in the showers after he walked 3 straight in the 4th inning...but Ozzie Guillen leaves Mr Underachiever in and lets Jon get out of the jam and turns in a solid performance to pick up his first win of the 2004 campaign. Fans could argue yesterday that Scott Schoeneweis was the victim of a good old fashioned plate-squeezing from the men in blue, but Garland just didn't seem to have command of his stuff. No need to fret though--as usual, he's just good enough for 8 innings. Shingo Takatsu makes his first regular season appearance for the Sox in the 9th and does a pretty passable Billy Koch impersonation, giving up 2 runs in garbage time.

Enough talk about mediocre pitching though--let's talk about great offense. Magglio Ordonez leads today's Bronx bombing going 2-4 with 5 RBI, 3 of which come off of a monster blast to left in the 5th inning. Joe Crede wakes up from his 0-fer-2004 slump in a big way with a solo homerun. Most important though, the top 2 batters in the Sox order, Willie Harris and Jose Valentin finally manage to get on base and get across the plate. A game like this was the confidence booster these guys need if they want to start setting the metaphorical table for the big guns. Paul Konerko and recently acquired Timo Perez also walk away with multiple hits. Today's combination of small ball and long ball played's hoping the Sox can keep this up for the rest of their stay in the Big Apple.

The 3rd game of the 4 game set with the Yankees is Saturday at 12:05 EDT. After 3+ years in the bigs, Mark Buehrle gets hsi long awaited first start at Yankee Stadium. A win tomorrow means a split for the series...and I don't think many of us would be too disappointed with that.

Ozzieball Update:
Wille Harris is today's Ozzieball poster boy--hitting a sac fly and hustling out an infield single, both of which lead to runs.
