Maalox Moments!

by Sox Fan Wh1teSox00 of the WSI message board

After watching the Oakland Athletics throw away their shot at ending (for the time being) the Yankees reign as World Champs, a feeling of absolute disgust crept into my stomach. I was very familiar with this feeling, but it had been absent the past four months or so. Gone, not because the Yankees were so mediocre this year, but because the As and Mariners were so superior.

With the Mariners having wrapped up the American League West sometime around the All-Star break, it was apparent that the only playoff shot that the As had was the Wild Card. They sat a few games back of the Red Sox, and had to make the Kenny Rogers Choice; whether to hold em or fold em. They decided on holding em, for now at least.

The As made a charge at Boston during the dog days of summer and had a playoff spot wrapped up by September, while the Yankees jogged the last months and won the American League East by default. The As finished with a record of 102-60, second only to the Mariners, and seven games better than New York. They kept up the pace even after they had clinched the wild card, and came into the American League Division Series red-hot. They would have no problem with an older, slower, creakier Yankee squad that had barely held them off last postseason.

Ahh, but its never that easy with the Yankees, is it?  Sure, the As won the first two games of the series at Yankee Stadium, and looked sharp as ever coming back to wrap it up on their home turf. And as they proceeded to lose the following two games, it was difficult to tell if the Yankees were taking it away, or the As were giving it away.

After game 3, the momentum swung tremendously in the Yankees favor, and that was when they really won the series because the Steamroller had finally gotten in gear. All that was left was Sinatra spreading the news after game 5, that the Yankees had done it and oh man , he said, that stomach of yours had better be ready to swallow some Grade-A bullshit about the Mystical Magical Yankees. But there is nothing magical or mystical about this team, they are simply consistent, and have made a science out of winning. No more, no less.

So the current kings of baseball live to see another day, and another playoff series. As it was last year, the team everyone loves to hate (myself included) has disposed of the As, and will play the Mariners in the ALCS again. But hopefully the rest of the postseason wont follow last years example. I dont think my stomach can take much more.
