WSI News - Totally Biased Game Recaps

Wright, Sox Continue Implosion

September 25th at Kansas City

Today's temperature:
"3 mores game of Jerry. Hang in there Sox fans. It will all be over soon enough."

Short Take:  Wright gets shelled and the Sox bats can't bail him out.

If a White Sox starter gets shelled and no one is watching, does it really count? Well, itís nice to see the real White Sox have returned. A day after posting a huge 8 run inning, the Sox didnít score even half of that in the entire game. Instead they were dominated for most of the night by Royals started Brian Anderson in losing 7-3. Then again, with Dan Wright starting this game, did the Sox ever really stand a chance? It sure didnít seem like it as the second batter Wright faced, Carlos Beltran, hit a 2 run home run to give the Royals a 2-0 lead. And that was just the beginning of Wrightís brilliant outing. In the 2nd he did the damage himself by walking the first two batters. A sacrifice moved the runners over and a ground out scored one more for a 3-0 Royals lead. And in the 4th, it got even worse. Wright allowed a runner to score before the second batter had even done anything, and no, the leadoff man didnít homer. Instead, he singled. Carlos Beltran singled to start the inning, then stole second, stole third, and scored on a wild pitch all with Rondell White still at bat. Wright would use his favorite weapon, the walk, to allow White to reach base. Two singles later and another run had scored giving the Royals a 5-0 lead before there was even an out in the 3rd inning. Amazingly, Wright the proceeded to record 3 straight outs and end the inning. Meanwhile, the Sox bats were doing little to help as they didnít have a hit through 4 innings.

Wright continued to destruct in the 4th. Brent Mayne led off with a double and advanced to 3rd on a passed ball. He then scored on a sac fly and one batter later, Rondell White would get hit own home run to make it a 7-0 game. At that point, even Tony Pena was grabbing a bat looking to go take his hacks against Wright. Unfortunately for Royals hitters, Wright would be done after 4 marvelous innings. But the real surprise is, the Sox actually managed to scratch across a run in the 5th. Nope, thatís not a typo. The Sox scored a run in the 5th. Aaron Rowand singled with 2 outs and reached second. A Joe Crede single brought Rowand around and the Sox finally had a run. Jon Adkins entered the game for the Sox in the bottom of the 5th and pitched much better. Adkins would finish out the game pitching 4 scoreless innings. But while the Royals were done scoring runs, the Sox surprisingly werenít. In the 8th, Aaron Miles reached on an infield single that he hustled out and Frank Thomas walked with 1 out. Magglio Ordonez double to right which scored 2 runs and the Sox had life! Ok, not really but hey, they managed to score 2 runs.

The Sox would put their first two men on in the 9th but a double play by Joe Crede ended any chance at a miracle comeback. Pinch hitter Brian Daubach would ground out to end the game. The game was never really as close as the 7-3 final score would indicate. Jerry Manuel continued to enjoy his final days of tinkering by starting Jamie Burke at catcher and getting the Aaronís (Rowand and Miles) playing time. The Sox will send Jon Garland to the mound tomorrow for the 7:05 cst start. The loss today means the Sox are now tied for 2nd place with the Royals. For what itís worth, the Sox can finish ahead of the Royals with a strong showing this weekend.

Tinkerer Update:
Rowand starts in center, Graffanino at shortstop, and Jamie Burke at catcher.
