Walking Off

September 22th vs New York

Today's temperature:
"The countdown is on. With only 6 games left in the season, Manuel gets ejected for what will most likely be his last time in a Sox uniform."

Short Take:  Sox win in walkoff fashion with an Ordonez 3 run homer.

If I told you the White Sox walked off the field to end the game Monday night, you’d probably figure that they just decided to quit pretending to care and end the season early. Well while that might not be all that far from the truth, that wasn’t the reason the Sox ended the game in walkoff style. Instead, it was a blast to left field that sent the Sox home with a 6-3 win over the New York Yankees and postponed the Yankees from clinching their division for at least 1 more day. Give credit to the brave souls who attended the game on a cool night with the Sox season just about over. The fans were really into the game and were given a White Sox win to celebrate. Granted this game doesn’t mean much in the grand scheme of things, but it was a nice way to win against those damn Yankees. The win is the Sox 82nd of the season meaning that they have clinched a winning season. As for the game itself, David Wells faced off against Bartolo Colon. The game started just as Sox fans might have expected it would based on this last week of play. The first batter of the game, Alfonso Soriano, homered to left field for the early 1-0 Yankees lead. But this time the Sox struck right back. In the bottom half of the inning Tony Graffanino singled to lead off the inning and with 1 out he stole second. Frank Thomas would bring him around with a double to left and the game was tied. But that wouldn’t last.

In the 3rd inning, Soriano came calling again and hit another solo home run, this time to center. In the 5th, the Yankees added one more on a Derek Jeter single with runners on 1st and 2nd to give the Yankees a 3-1 lead. But the Sox managed to come back again. Joe Crede led off the bottom of the 5th with a single and after a Miguel Olivo sacrifice, Graffanino singled again to score a run this time and make it a 3-2 lead. Frank Thomas would bring Graffanino around to score 2 batters later on a base hit to left. The game would stay tied though as the bullpen managed to keep any runs from scoring. Scott Sullivan pitched a perfect 1 inning and 1/3 but when the normally reliable Damaso Marte came in with 1 out, things got shaky. He walked the first two batters he faced, but was able to escape by getting a double play off the bat of Bernie Williams to end the inning. In the 9th, Marte was just as shaky. A single by Hideki Matsui started the inning. A sacrifice and a ground out later, the Sox were almost out of the inning. But an intentional walk to Soriano and a walk by Nick Johnson left the bases loaded for Derek Jeter. Tom Gordon came on for Marte and would get a big strikeout against Jeter to end the top of the 9th.

But after Gordon retired the Yankees in the 10th, the Sox finally managed to make Sox fans happy, if only for a few moments. With 1 out, Roberto Alomar singled and Frank Thomas walked to bring up Magglio Ordonez. Maggs crushed a Jeff Weaver pitch to left field for a game winning 3 run home run. The walkoff home run is the first of Magglio’s career. It may not be much, but at least it gives Sox fans something to briefly be happy about. The Sox win not only prevents the Yankees from clinching the AL East but it keeps David Wells from recording his 200th career win. The Sox will try to keep the Yankees champagne on ice for another day when Mark Buehrle takes to the hill on Tuesday. If nothing else, hopefully the Sox can keep postponing the Yankees celebration.

Tinkerer Update:
Rowand starts in center and Graffanino starts at shortstop.
