Bring on the Twinkies...

September 14 At Boston

Today's temperature:
"Jerry's boys come to play on Sunday, sending them to their off day tied for first. Biggest series of the year starts on Tuesday. No way for them to be tied with the Twinkies after it is done so they better come to play."

Short Take:  Solid all around effort leads Sox to win.

The Sox came into Sunday's game tied for first with their next opponent, the Twinkies. Mark Buehrle took the mound hoping to pitch well enough to give the Sox a chance and hoping for some run support from an offense that has struggled recently. Meanwhile the "Other" Sox countered with John Burkett who had handled the Sox for 6 innings in his recent start in Chicago. Oh, they also benched the struggling Nomar Garciaperra who had driven in the only Boston run on Saturday. That sound you heard at the beginning of the game was Sox fans across the land saying "phew" or else something completely unprintable depending on which color jersey they had on.

The game got off to a rousing start as Robbie Alomar led off the game with a double and Carlos Lee followed with a towering 2-run blast over the seats on top of the "Green Monster". Boston got those two runs back in the second and third innings, on a solo-shot by Manny Ramirez and a couple of singles followed by 2 sacrifice flies. But, not to worry, Sox fans, in the 5th inning the Sox broke through against Burkett. Sandy Alomar led off the scoring with a solo-shot and after his little brother drew a walk, Lee doubled off the wall in left-center and Magglio Ordonez hit another one down the third-base line. The 3-runs were all BurlyMon needed as he settled down and worked a solid seven innings throwing 119 pitches and scattering seven hits while walking only one and striking out three. The final two innings were given to Damaso Marte who was his usual brilliant self. He did allow a couple of singles but both baserunners were quickly erased. The Sox tacked on two-runs in the ninth as Frank Thomas delivered a single with two-outs and the bases loaded and the Sox go on to win 7-2.

With the Twinkies winning in Cleveland again, the Sox couldn't gain any ground, but at least they didn't lose any either. The season may well come down to the 3-game set in the baggie-dome which starts on Tuesday. The Sox rearranged their pitching staff again and are sending Esteban Loaiza to the mound to try and get the series off to a solid start. The Twinkies will counter with Brad Radke in a rematch of Thursday's final game at The Cell. Hopefully it will have a better result and the Sox can put some breathing room between them and the Hostess products...

Tinkerer Update:
Daubach gets another start, but doesn't do much with it.
