"Damaso Marte makes Jerry look like he actually knows how to handle a bullpen, even if only for one day."

Short Take:  The Sox are back in first thanks to a solid start by Loaiza and a huge relief appearance by Marte.

The roller coaster that is White Sox baseball hit yet another peak Wednesday night. The Sox entered the game only Ĺ game back of the Royals who had already lost and sending Esteban Loaiza to the mound in an attempt to gain a share of first place. Loaiza would give the Sox another strong outing though he would struggle late. Damaso Marte would ease Sox fans fears though and preserve a White Sox win. Loaiza made one mistake early in the game and allowed a home run to Adam Riggs. Jose Valentin would soon make up for that. With 1 out in the second Brian Daubach walked to bring up Valentin. With one swing of the bat, Jose gave the Sox the lead with his 2 run home run. Loaiza did allow 10 hits on the night but managed to get himself out of jams. In the top of the 3rd, Chone Figgins led off the inning with a triple as it looked like the Angels would tie the game at 2. However, Loaiza had his owns thoughts as he proceeded to strike out the next three batters to keep the runner at 3rd. In the bottom half of the inning, Magglio Ordonez would get a blast of his own, this one of the solo variety, to make it a 3-1 Sox lead.

The Sox next run would come with the help of the Angels. Maggs would start the inning with a single to right with 1 out. He then stole second base and advanced to 3rd on a wild pitch. Carl Everett flew out to center but it was enough to score Ordonez. The next hitter, Brian Daubach, walked but was then picked off first. Daubach threw his helmet down in disgust and would be ejected. But the real suspense for Sox fans came in the 7th inning. With a 4-1 lead and Esteban Loaiza seemingly in control, things were looking good for Sox fans. But thatís when the problems started. Trent Durrington, Alfredo Amezaga, and Chone Figgins strung together consecutive singles to score one. Jeff DaVanon then walked to load the bases with no outs. Jerry Manuel decided that Loaiza had had enough and pulled him in favor of Damaso Marte. It would prove to be a great move. Marte allowed a sacrifice fly to Garrett Anderson to score another run and make it a 4-3 game but then forced Tim Salmon to fly out and finally struck out Scott Spiezio to keep the damage to a minimum. In the bottom half of the inning, Carl Everett gave the Sox a little insurance by blasting a solo shot to right to make it a 5-3 game.

Damaso Marte would pitch the 8th and 9th innings. After allowing a walk in the 8th, Marte struck out the side. Marte retired the Angels in order in the 9th to finish off the game and give the Sox the win. Roberto Alomar was 4-5 in this game with 4 infield singles. In the 1st and 2nd innings, Alomar bunted for hits giving him 3 bunt singles over the past two games. Alomar would also steal two bases in this game. While Alomar had a great game, the same couldnít be said for Carlos Lee. Lee left 7 runners on base in the game and was one of two Sox starters that failed to reach base (Frank Thomas being the other). The win gives Loaiza his 16th win on the year tying him with Roy Halladay for first in the AL and second in the majors. The Sox now open a 4 game home series against the Rangers. After getting shelled in his last start, Bartolo Colon will look for some redemption against Colby Lewis when he takes the mound at 7:05 cst on Thursday. With the Royals and Twins facing each other, it is crucial that the Sox win this series.
