Garland Twirls A Gem!

August 19 vs Angels

Today's temperature:
"Defending World Champs? Doesn't matter who they are when Jerry's boys take the field at the Cell, they're virtually unstoppable."

Short Take: Small ball leads to big win

As of Sunday, a matchup between the Sox and the Angels would have been nothing short of a disaster. The injury-plagued but scrappy Angels took 3 out of 4 from the jet-lagged Sox last week. But change the time zone and the stadium, and all of a sudden the Sox are a force to be reckoned with! Sox win their second in a row on their homestand and take advantage of a Royals loss to move to back within one game of first place. With those annoying Twins breathing down their necks, the Sox truly stand and deliver!

Jon Garland took the hill for the Sox tonight knowing he had to throw lights out...and he did! Big Jon works 8 solid innings, scattering 5 hits. Garland posts one strikeout versus three walks, but get the groundouts when he needs them to keep the Angels at bay. Walks aside, Jon's only slip-ups came when he surrendered solo home runs to Angels just-up-from-AAA schleprocks Adam Riggs and Antonio Amenzaga. Sure, these guys tally the first big league jacks of their career, but it doesn't matter when there's no one on base and your team has to chance of winning. Tom Gordon sees action for the 3rd day in a row and picks up the save, tossing a 1-2-3 ninth inning.

Last night, the Sox won with the longball, taking advantage of 2 Frank Thomas home runs to squeak out the win. Tonight the Sox resort to station-to-station baseball to earn the win, racking up 11 hits on the night without a single home run. Carlos Lee plays the role of catalyst with an RBI single in the 5th bringing home Tony Graffanino. Tony's making the most of his increased playing time lately (note to Sox management: this doesn't mean he can play everyday) and gets the Sox on the board. Two innings later, Lee singles home Graffanino (again) and Miguel Olivo (making a rare appearance on the basepaths tonight). Frank Thomas continues to shake off his West Coast slump with a solid single that brings home Lee, and then Carl Everett brings home Thomas with a double. That was all the scoring the Sox needed on their way to victory.

Sox and Angels meet for the last time this year Wednesday night. Estaban Loaiza guns for the sweep and his 16th win of the season against John Lackey.
