Royal Pain

August 4 Vs. Kansas City

Today's temperature:
"Let's see, bad bullpen management, bad decision making, poor lineup creation skill, poorly motivated team and terrible fundamentals. Well done, Jerry, you've got all the bases covered..."

Short Take:  More poor decisions and lack of intensity allow Kansas City to walk all over the Sox.

Well, the Royals came to town looking for a fight for first. Unfortunately they got the Jerry's Sox to contend with and that meant it wasn't much of a fight. The Sox were looking to make a statement after being blown out of the last two games, and initially they managed to make a run at it. Jon Garland started and pitched fairly well, giving up 3 runs over 5+ innings and leaving after 79 pitches because Jerry decided he had seen enough. Never mind that the Sox were winning at the time 6-3 and that at least 2 of the Royal runs could have been prevented if Paul Konerko was half the defensive whiz, Jerry thinks he is. Never mind the fact that Garland was clearly upset about being pulled after giving up a leadoff single in the 6th. This is management Jerry Manuel style and you can throw the book out the window.

After Paulie's glove allowed at least one and possibly two runs to score in the 5th to turn a 2-run lead into a 1-run deficit, the Sox came back to grab a 6-3 lead on a 3-run shot by Joe Crede, but when Manuel pulled Garland for some reason he went to Scott Schoeneweis who promptly gave up a whole bunch of runs and turned that 3-run lead into a 2-run deficit. When did Scott become a shutdown guy? Is Jerry really sure what role he is supposed to fill? If so, you could have fooled me. Then Jerry went to Matt "last man in the bullpen" Ginter who had the brains to throw AT a Royal player thus getting both him AND Jerry ejected and giving the Sox half a chance. Then the Sox brought in an A-list reliever (Kelly Wunsch) and he managed to retire 5 of 6 Royals he faced but not before giving up the decisive double to make the score 10-6. The Sox fought back to make it a 10-9 game, but then gave up 3 more insurance runs in the ninth - again some of that the result of Konerkos amazing glovework. Yours truly left after the first of them.

It was a frustrating night to be a Sox fan as everything that could have gone wrong did. The Sox hit some more homers, but in the end they got out-played by Tony Pena's Royals. Manuel continues to prove how truly clueless he is with his bullpen management and insistence on sticking with Paul Konerko at first base for defensive reasons that surely have to be explained to any other manager. The series continues tomorrow on another half-price night at Soxpark. Hopefully another big crowd gets to see a better effort than tonight. Hopefully Manuel doesn't decide to pull Loaiza at the first hiccup.

Tinkerer Update:
The lineup was normal, but the bullpen was screwy and when exactly does Paul Konerko's glove start paying off for the offense it costs the team?

Dialed LONG distance for hit number 2000. Just think how good he'd be playing if Jerry would let him play first.
