Sox All Tinkered Out...

August 3 At Seattle

Today's temperature:
"Does Jerry really have any clue on how to manage a baseball team? I mean what was with that Sunday Special Corpseball Lineup? Wake up, Jerry! Crap like that is part of what is wrong with this team."

Short Take: Seattle singles the Sox to death. Jerry tinkers the Sox into one more loss.

Sunday day getaway games always make Sox fans wince. Those conditions seem to increase the likelihood of tinkering in direct correlation with how well the team is doing. Since the Sox have been red-hot since the All-Star Break, they had been using a set lineup and absolutely killing the ball. So, naturally, they HAD to be tired, right, Sox fans? Well, Jerry Manuel seemed to think so because he took last night's loss to heart and benched four of the regular players for today's game. Willie Harris and his .239 OBP were leading off and things weren't looking so good. In fact, Sandy Alomar - Mark Buehrle's regular catcher didn't play either because he caught for Danny "Not" Wright last night. Meanwhile, the Mariners were playing their regular starting 9 which means, the Sox - wanting to make a statement coming home to Chicago - were facing an 0-2 count before ever having seen a pitch.

The Sox offense was as bad as expected. None of Jerry's tinkers were doing much, but Mark Buehrle was looking strong for the first 4 innings. Then the Sox manufactured a run in the 5th and the Mariners countered with 2 walks sandwiched around a fielder's choice and a couple of singles in the bottom half to grab a 2-1 lead. When the next batter flied out to right it looked like the Sox might get out of it, but the next soft grounder to Jose Valentin was bobbled. They gave the batter a hit, but it should have been an error. Buehrle struggled after that and when the dust cleared, the Sox were losing 6-1. Billy Koch came on to start the 6th and gave up 2 more runs (what's new?) before getting Mike Cameron to swing at ball 4 on a full count with 2 outs and the bases loaded. The rest of the game didn't really matter. Aaron Rowand hit a solo-homer, which does not excuse his first two at bats where he didn't do a thing with two men on and the game still undecided. In the end, the Sox played Corpseball and got crushed.

Most of the streak information is bad. Magglio hasn't had a hit since his 11-game-all-word-ever hitting streak came to an end on Thursday. Manuel's tinkers went a combined 1-12 with a couple of walks. It wasn't pretty. Most of the regulars never even got to pinch-hit because the game was such a blowout. Hopefully this doesn't carry over to Monday, because the Royals come to town to continue the fight for first. Though the Sox have been beat these past few games, they are coming home to beautiful, scenic, U.S. Cellular Field where they are 13-games over .500 on the year. A big crowd will be there to greet them they should be ready to play. They're damned well rested enough, that's for sure...

Tinkerer Update:
Where to begin? I guess I should name the people who started the game in their regular batting slot. Maggs, Everett, Valentin and Olivo. The rest was a crap shoot...

Reached base three times, but there was no one on in front of him to drive in and no one behind him drove him in either.
