Lopsided Battle in Seattle!

August 1 vs Seattle

Today's temperature:
"Tied for first just like they started the season. It's about time. The offense is so hot they are starting to make Jerry look cool..."

Short Take: Another City, Another Win

A baseball pundit whose name eludes me remarked yesterday that "the Sox are done playing the best of the worst. Now they're facing the best of the best." Let's face it, AL Central leaders or not, the Kansas City Royals don't exactly fit into the "elite teams" category in Major League baseball. But the Seattle Mariners do, and the Sox prove that they can run with them, kicking off their weekend series against the Seamen with a 12-1 thrashing. Sox move into a tie for first place and extend their win streak to 5 in a row. Sure feels good to pull out a win in Seattle for only the 4th time since 2000.

Once again, the long ball and the early lead are the modus operandi for the Sox. The boys in black jump all over the struggling Freddy Garcia in the 1st inning and just keep pouring it on. Carlos Lee doubles, Magglio Ordonez walks, and Carl Everett blasts a 3 run homer that stays just west of the foul pole in right field. Carl posts 5 RBIs on the night and is starting to look like the beast that we thought we traded for at the beginning of last month. Paul Konerko steps up to the plate next, and blasts Garcia's meatball offering deep to center field. Funny how now that Paulie's hitting the ball, the rampant speculation about a chronic hip condition is loooong gone. Wasn't his hip was his head. Freddy manages to get out of the first, but his personal nightmare picks right back up in the next frame as the Sox touch him for 3 more runs and pretty much put the game out of reach. Carlos Lee strokes an RBI single, and then Everett knocks both him and Robbie Alomar home. 5 RBIs in 2 innings? Very nice indeed considering this team couldn't even put 5 runs on the board in an entire game at the beginning of July. Freddy Garcia gets chased and his ERA balloons to 11+ over the past 6 games. Carlos Lee adds a solo longball in the 4th and the Sox B-team of Rowand, Harris and Daubach get their chance to get plated in the 9th. Sox bats fall silent for a few innings, but hey, they need to save some energy for tomorrow!

Bartolo Colon post yet another solid start against the Mariners, far better than his rain-shortened outing against them this past May. Colon, who seems to be returning to power pitcher form, strikes out 8, including 4 in a row at one point, and walks none. Bart's not goofing around with a sinker and a curbe anymore, he's just bringing the heat...and that's exactly what we're looking for. Colon works 8 innings before giving way to Billy Koch, who managed not to screw anything up and earn the last 3 outs of the game while only giving up one dribbling hit. Colon evens his record at 9-9. He may not win 20 this year, but if he keeps this up, he'll definitely be a horse we can ride all the way to the playoffs.

About the only thing casting a pall on the Sox glorious run this week is Frank Thomas' sudden inability to hit. With Konerko heating back up, is it time for Paulie to DH and Frank to get his butt back out to first base? It worked like a charm last time, and Konerko wasn't even hitting his weight then.

Sox and Mariners play the second of their 3 game set tomorrow. Danny Wright gets yet another cup of coffee (Starbucks in Seattle?) in the majors as he duels it out with Ryan Franklin.

Tinkerer Update:
Where has all the tinkering gone? Same lineup again!
