July 20 Vs. Tigers

Today's temperature:
"Jerry's tinkering pays off for the second straight day. Is it luck? Of course it is luck! Beating the Tigers is something that every team does. The Sox will need to keep this up against the real teams if Jerry is going to keep his job."

Short Take: Sox bats explode in series winning blowout.

The Sox came into Sunday's game just hoping to stay above .500 against the worst team in baseball. For some reason they have had a real tough time against the clawless kitties from Detroit. Esteban Loaiza took the mound for the Sox and the Tigers countered with Wilfredo Ledezma, who has actually been solid for them this season. Sox fans were hoping that they team could continue its recent offensive surge and put the ugly close to the first half behind them. Jerry Manuel didn't inspire much confidence when he sent out a lineup with no Carl Everett or Robbie Alomar and with Tony Graffanino and Aaron Rowand in the top two slots. I guess the last couple of games were just too much success for one team to handle, and Jerry felt the need to bring them back to Earth. Surprise, surprise the tinkering worked...

Esteban made quick work of the Tigers in the first inning and the Sox offense got going immediately. Graffanino led off with a triple and Rowand hit a sacrifice fly. Frank Thomas followed with the 90th first inning homer of his career and the Sox led 2-0 and they weren't even close to being done. In the third, Frank hit another solo-shot. Magglio followed with a double that he watched for a long time before running - just barely making it to second. Carlos Lee hit a soft single that only moved Maggs to third, but Paul Konerko picked him up with his second straight hit and still the Sox weren't done. They tacked on 3 more in the 4th and 3 more in the 5th and led 10-1 because Esteban made a single mistake to Eric Munson. Esteban ended up pitching 7 innings and only giving up the single run. Then Jerry took the opportunity to get Gary Glover and Billy Koch some work. They both pitched scoreless innings (Koch actually putting down the Tigers 1-2-3 in the ninth) to close out a great day of baseball and seal the series win.

Okay, the Tigers have left the building and they aren't coming back. Now the Sox need to prove they can do this against teams that are less than 40 games under .500. Of course the Sox are THE main reason that the Tigers aren't 50 games under .500, so I guess the fans should be happy with babysteps. This one was fun to watch. Paulie continues his hot hitting going 3-4 with another homer and a couple of RBI. In fact, every Sox starter had a hit except for Joe Crede. 4 guys had 3 hits, 3 guys drove in at least 2 runs and 3 guys scored at least 2 runs. Make a fan wonder where the offense has been all year. 10 runs on 16 hits is just perfect, keep it going. The Sox send Mike Porzio to the mound on Monday hoping to keep the streak going. 7 more wins and we get to shave Hawks head...

Tinkerer Update:
Graffy at 2B leads off and does well. Rowand batting second and playing CF has an okay day. I guess Frank at DH and Paulie at 1B is no longer a tinker...
