M's jump all over Howry; beat Sox 11-4

March 13th, from the Associated Press

Paul Abbott gave up six consecutive hits to open the game, then settled down to get the win as the Seattle Mariners beat a split squad of Chicago White Sox 11-4 Wednesday.

Bret Boone hit his first homer of spring training and Ryan Minor also connected for Seattle.

Abbott, a 17-game winner last season who figures to be the Mariners' No. 3 starter behind Freddy Garcia and Jamie Moyer, allowed four runs on nine hits in four innings.

In the first inning, though, Chicago's Kenny Lofton had a bunt base hit, Jose Valentin singled, Magglio Ordonez tripled in two runs and Paul Konerko singled in another. Carlos Lee and Tony Graffanino also singled before Abbott struck out Royce Clayton and got Sandy Alomar Jr. to hit into a double play.

Abbott (2-1) came out with a 6-4 lead and a lot of satisfaction.

The Mariners tied the score at 3 in the bottom of the first on Boone's two-run homer and an RBI single by new starting third baseman Jeff Cirillo, who came into the game hitting .179 this spring.

Boone got another RBI in the second when the Mariners added two runs.

The White Sox, who came into the game leading the majors with a .368 team batting average this spring, wound up with 10 hits. Both Konerko and Carlos Lee each had two hits.

The Mariners had 16 hits off five Chicago pitchers, including eight for five runs in 2 2-3 innings against reliever Bob Howry.

Ryan Franklin pitched two scoreless innings for Seattle.

Franklin hasn't allowed an earned run in seven innings this spring. During the offseason, the slightly built right-hander added 12 pounds.
