All-Star Breaks!

Bustin' up the season at the mid-point.

The All Star Game is right around the corner, and as of this writing the Sox just got swept by the offensive machine that is the Murder City Kitties, yes the same Tiggers that are flirting with becoming the worst baseball team in history, a team that boasts a pitching rotation that may have three twenty game losers on it. This is the same Sox team that was picked by many in the baseball media to walk away with the Central Division Crown, only to find themselves mired in third place as the break approaches, behind a Twins team that has been called a pretender for three seasonís now, and the Mighty Kansas City Royals. I donít know that the Royals are for real, but they have been around the top of the division since they took two of three from the Sox to open the season, and continue to plug along. I would have to think that it really burns David Glassí ass that with the trade deadline approaching he wonít be able to do the annual talent sell-off that most baseball fans know and love, he must know that only a fool sells off talent at the deadline when his team is in contention, just ask Jerry Reinsdorf, he is still feeling the effects of a trade that happened five years ago. †

All-Star Musings

Speaking of the All Star Game, it is in Chicago this year, at the park formerly known as Comiskey, and the Sox will have three representatives, Esteban Loiaza gets an invite for being one of the best pitchers in the American League, and who would of thunk that when the season started. Is this really the same pitcher that couldnít get a return phone call from almost every major league team? Also representing the Sox is the newly acquired Carl Everett, based on the numbers he posted with the Texas Rangers, the same Rangers that thought enough of his numbers to ship him off, and pay his salary for the rest of the year, for three minor league players they have yet to decide on, and judging from the pool of eight they have to choose from I can see why, not a whole lot there for folks. The third member of the Sox at the ASG is none other than the manager himself, Jerry Manuel, who gets the nod as a coach simply because tradition states that the hometown manager be included in the coaching staff. Since Bud has chosen to throw out most of what the ASG was meant to be, why are the managers even attempting to stick to the long standing traditions? The All Star rosters this year are laughable to say the least, twenty seven first time All Stars is fine, if their performance merits their inclusion, unfortunately this is not the case, Budís mind numbingly stupid decision to make this game count for something has skewed the normal thinking in the selection process. I wonít go into detail about the inclusions and exclusions, it is not worth your time, sadly the All Star Game probably wonít be either, Bud has turned the Midsummer Classic into the Midsummer Joke, and there is no end in sight.

Adding Sandy's Brother

Robbie Alomar has joined the Sox, along with the already mentioned Everett, similar to Everett Kenny Williams obtained Alomar for three minor league players, one of whom may actually play in the majors. Kenny also arranged to have Jim Duquette and the Mets pay the balance of Robbieís salary for the rest of the year, for the effort of taking him off their roster. Alomar is a great addition to this roster in my opinion, he gives the Sox the second baseman they thought they had in the DíAngelo Jimenez, but unlike Jimenez Alomar can actually play defense, and believe it or not, he has a clue on the basepaths. I think the news that he was being designated for assignment came to Jimenez while he was busy getting caught striding too far from first, but I might be wrong on that. I like the addition of Robbie Alomar, he can provide veteran leadership as well as a good glove at second base, imagine it Sox fans, a second baseman that can move to his left as well as his right! He also provides a draft pick when he declares for FA at the end of the season, I doubt he would accept arbitration, and if he did I wouldnít have a problem seeing him as the second baseman next season.

Fond Farewells

Other than that some minor news, DíAngelo Jimenez is taking his lazy act to Cincinnati for minor league pitcher Scott Dunn, who will help fill out the bullpen in Birmingham, and Armando Rios has accepted a transfer to AAA Charlotte, a team that needs all the help it can get, Rios probably wonít help much though. Joe Borchard continues to struggle with injuries and it shows in his stats, which are less than inspiring to say the least. The way the Sox are doing this season the most important thing is the fact that I fixed my boat after tearing my motor apart on a stump during a tournament, the way things are going fishing will be the only thing going on come Sept. Maybe someone in upper management will get a clue and fire Jerry Manuel, right after the All Star break, they are already grooming his replacement so go ahead and pull the trigger.†
