Comerica Corpseball!

July 8th vs Tigers

Today's temperature:
"Jerry's pathetic tinkering is WAY past old. This team is too good to be wasting chances against bad baseball teams. Jerry's decisions and mindless gambles are most of the problem."

Short Take: Bad Hitting, Bad Calls, Bad Game

What is it with the White Sox playing down to their opponents? After losing 2 out of 3 to Tampa Bay, the Sox head up to the Motor City for a 3 game set with the Tigers. The hot bats and homers of June are replaced by July sluggishness as the Sox fall 2-1, allowing the Tigers to win their 22nd game of the year. The Sox have won almost twice that many..and with the pathetic show they put on tonight, ya gotta wonder how.

The Sox were facing Tigers hurler Wilfredo Ledezma who was making his first major league start tonight. Naturally, the Sox couldn't figure him out! Ledezma shuts the Sox down for 5 innings before the fearsome Tiger relief tandem of Steve Spurling and Chris Mears comes on and only allows one run. Mears, who hasn't even been in the majors for a WEEK, shuts down the Sox, gives up just one hit and earns the save. Tiger defense also turns 4 double plays...but that's not hard to do with this groundout-happy bunch of Pale Hose.

The Sox spent their off day yesterday frolicking on a waterside resort in Florida, and it looks like they left their bats on the beach. Maggs Ordonez, Carlos Lee and Aaron Rowand all notch 2 hits on the night, but the rest of the team is pretty much lifeless. Tonight's cruel ironic note: the Sox score their lone run on a Paul Konerko double play grounder. PK gets to pad his RBI numbers AND his league-leading GIDP numbers..who could ask for anything more? Robbie Alomar is held hitless for the first time in a Sox uniform. And Carl Everett, who was supposed to be given the night off because he's "tired" still managed to get a single in his pinch hit appearance. Sox were the victim of some terrible umpiring in the ninth as Thomas and Ordonez both are called out on strikes which clearly weren't.

Another fine effort from Jon Garland is wasted. It's a pity Big Jon had to eat this loss, as his only real mistake was serving up the game winning gopher ball to Carlos Pena. Gralnd scattered 6 hits over 7 innings. Tom Gordon does an admirable job in relief, retiring the side with the bases loaded, but again it goes all for naught.

Game 2 against the Tigers is tomorrow night. Bartolo Colon faces rookie Jeremy Bonderman, owner of a 2-13 record. Let's try not to embarass ourselves too much.

Tinkerer Update:
Pauly at 1B, Olivo catches, Rowand in CF, Graffy at SS. Tinker tinker.
