Sox Avoid Embarassment!

July 6th vs Devil Rays

Today's temperature:

"Damed good thing the bats woke up, I would have looked really bad getting swept by Sweet Lou's club again."

Short Take: Buehrle Express Keeps on Rolling!

Just when the Sox looked like they were ready to revert back to corpseball and blown saves, they turn in an impressive performance like today. Led by a solid pitching performance from Mark Buerhle, the South Siders manage to leave Tampa Bay with one win against Lou "Blondie" Pinella's Devil Rays under their belt, outscoring the Devil Dogs 11-3. Losing this series to Tampa Bay is pretty embarassing, especially seeing as that pretty much the entire month of July features the Sox doing battle with various American League doormats..we cannot let this trend continue. Can't complain abotu the big number put up on the scoreboard today though.

Mark Buehrle has almost managed to earn Sox fans' forgivness for his atrocious start this season. The big lefty scatters 7 hits over 7 innings, walks none and notches 1 strikeout. In a somewhat ironic twist, the only Devil Ray to get any RBIs off Buerhle is Carl Crawford, whose walk off homer on Friday cost the Sox the game. Is this slug going to end up as another one of those annoying Sox killers like Mike Sweeney? Let's hope not. David Sanders and Gary Glover scrape the rust off their arms handle today's mop-up duties admirably...and look a heck of a lot better on the hill than Billy Koch.

What can we say about the Sox offense today? A whole hell of a lot! Who knows where these guys were Friday and Saturday, but it was nice to see them show up today. EVERY Sox starter reached base via a hit or walk...and that includes Paul Konerko! The threes come up lucky for "Manos" asJose Valentin goes 3 for 3 on the day, drilling a 3 run home run in the 3rd inning in addition to 2 hits. Anyone who says the kids can;t hit is lying--Joe Crede also tallies 3 RBI on the afternoon, 2 of which come on a blast to centerfield. Aaron Rowand keeps wielding the hot stick with a 2 hit afternoon. The new guys can make contact too--Carl Everett posts an RBI double and Robbie Alomar adds a hit. Finally, Magglio Ordonez homers for the second day in a row. Why can't winning always be this easy?

The Sox get an off day tomorrow as they travel to cavernous Comerica Park for a set with the Detroit Tigers. Jon Garland gets the nod for Tuesday's tilt against untested Wil Ledezma.
