WSI News - Totally Biased Game Recaps

Billy BLOWS (it)!

July 4th at Tampa

Today's temperature:
"Maybe Kenny will deal for a closer next and help Jerry out. Sox fans can't be THAT lucky can they. Something has to be done, that's for sure."

Short Take: 3-run Tampa walkoff gets Sox trip off to a bad start

Hot off a 3-game sweep of division rival, Minnesota, the Sox were hoping to get their 10-game pre-All-Star road trip off to a good start in Tampa. Bartolo Colon had looked tired in his last start and Sox fans were anxious to see how he would perform. The Devil Rays countered with Victor Zambrano who has been solid this year. Early on, Zambrano was wild and walked the bases loaded after an error allowed Carl Everett to reach first base with one out in the second inning. The Sox took advantage to score a quick two runs when Robbie Alomar slapped a 3-2 pitch the other way after two men were out. Meanwhile Bartolo Colon was pitching well, scattering 8 hits and a walk over 6.2 innings. He left after giving up a solo-shot, a bunt single and another single, but Damaso Marte came on with men on and put out the fire. In fact he would retire all 4 men he faced. The Sox added another run on a solo-shot of their own by Brian Daubach in the ninth and the stage was set for Billy Koch...

Sox fans aren't exactly becoming enamored with Mr. Koch this season. He has been at best inconsistent and mostly downright bad. The Sox have been more lucky with him on the mound than anything else, or so it seems. Still, Billy hasn't been horrid in save opportunities this year and has actually recorded a win 3 times in the last week. Most Sox fans hold their breath when Billy comes out to the mound, and tonight it wasn't enough. Billy started out well enough by striking out pinch hitter Jason Tyner, but Javier Valentin fought off a bunch of pitches before singling. Then Al Martin singled and the stage was set. Billy had Carl ".641 OPS" Crawford coming to the plate, so of course it was inevitable that Crawford would foul off the first pitch before driving the second one into the seats in right field and break Sox fans hearts and TV remotes across the nation. There has to be someone else in the bullpen that can do the same thing. Maybe it's time to give them a try.

Colon looked much stronger tonight. He pitched well enough for the win, but the Sox couldn't get over the hump. Joe Crede and Miguel Olivo are both mired in a deep funk. The middle of the order didn't do much either. The story of the game was Robbie Alomar who had two hits and 2 RBI. Daubach also remains hot, doing his best to put the Sox over the top with an important insurance run, but Billy "The Goat" Koch was greater than them both. The Sox send Loaiza to the mound on Saturday hoping to get back on track. It was looking like a great Independence Day, too...

Tinkerer Update:
Nothing. Nada. Zip. Bupkiss. It was the exact same lineup as Wednesday with the same guys playing the same positions batting in the same slot. Well, there was the catcher platoon, but that isn't really a tinker. So what happens? The Sox lose...
