WSI News - Totally Biased Game Recaps

Creeping Back To The Top

June 30th vs Minnesota

Today's temperature:
"Coming off of a big emotional series win, with a disappointing finish the Sox came out smoking. You would have thought they were the first place team and the Twinkies a third place team instead of the other way around. "

Short Take:  Garland pitches well, and the Sox offense slugs their way to a win.

  • The White Sox began a new test Monday with the Minnesota Twins in town. We all know that Sox players get up for the Flubs series, but would that emotion stay with them for the Twins series? Well through the first game all looks well. The Sox came ready to play in all aspects of the game and the result was a dominating 10-3 win over the hated Twins.
  • Jon Garland continues to look like an improved pitcher as he pitched well again today. Garland went 7 strong innings allowing 2 runs, walking 2, and striking out 7. The two runs came in the 7th off of back-to-back home runs by Bobby Kielty and A.J. Pierzynski. The outing gives Garland his 6th win of the season and drops his ERA to 4.65. If Garland can keep this up, it will give Sox fans a lot more to be optimistic about.
  • A day after being shut down by Kerry Wood, the Sox came out swinging against Joe “Cy” Mays. The Sox didn’t wait long either. Leadoff man Willie Harris started off the game with a triple when Twins right fielder Bobby Kielty fell down. The next hitter, Aaron Rowand would drive him in with a single. In the 2nd inning, Joe Crede hit a 2 run home run to extend the lead to 3-0. The Sox would grab that early lead and never look back.
  • Magglio Ordonez hit 2 home runs in this game. The first came in the 3rd inning with Frank Thomas aboard, having doubled in Rowand. The first blast by Ordonez gave the Sox a 6-0 lead. It was also Maggs 1000th career hit. Hit number 1001 was also a homerun. Later in the inning Jose Valentin would hit his own 2 run home run to make it a 8-0 game. Valentin was robbed of a potential shot in the 2nd when Tor-I-I Hunter made another great catch in center field. Maggs second homer came in the 7th with no one aboard. Two batters later, Carlos Lee would hit his own solo shot to make it a 10-2 game.
  • Overall, the Sox would finish with 5 HR’s accounting for 8 of their 10 runs. All but 2 White Sox starters finished with at least 1 hit, those two being Armando Rios and Miguel Olivo. Brian Daubach pinch hit for Thomas late in the game and drew a walk. Tony Graffanino came in for Ordonez and grounded into a fielder’s choice in his only at-bat.
  • Damaso Marte pitched a scoreless 8th inning as the Sox already had the game in hand. And then the surprise of the game occurred. Sox fans learned that Gary Glover is indeed still alive as he came in to pitch in the 9th inning. He gave up 1 run, but who can blame him? He hasn’t pitched in a game since June 11th!
  • The Sox look to guarantee a series win tomorrow at 7:05 cst as Mark Buehrle faces Brad Radke. The two met last Thursday with Buehrle getting the best of the Twins, pitching a complete game and allowing just one run. If the Sox are going to win the division, they’ll need Buehrle to pitch like an ace, and what better time than against the Twins.

Tinkerer Update:
Armando Rios starts at DH. Terrific waste of the DH spot, Jerry. Rowand starts in center and bats 2nd.
