Sox-Plosion!

June 20th vs Cubs

Today's temperature:

"Wins against the Flubbies are nice, the team was clearly ready to play this game. Hopefully this improvement isn't just for one game or series"

Short Take: Sox Triumph In Enemy Territory!

  • They can't beat Boston. They can't beat the Twins. Heck, they even have trouble beating Detroit and San Diego. But today is a glorious day to be a Sox fan, as the South Siders THRASH the Flubbie hype machine on their way to a 12-3 victory at Wrigley Field. Chicago's glorious baseball "landmark" is stained with the most lopsided game in Crosstown history and us South Siders couldn't be any happier!
  • Jon Garland shows up today and shows the Cubs what they missed when they traded him away a few years ago. Big Jon scatters 8 hits over 6 frames, and shows plenty of poise in pitching himself out of jams with runners on base. Best of all, he struck out Sammy Sosa! The Scrubby Cubby offense was just no match for the Sox, with Whiffin' Sammy going 0-3 and Corey Patterson also held hitless. Cubs put up numbers all too familiar to Sox fans: 10 hits, but only 3 runs and 11 men left on base. It always feels so good to see these numbers coming from the opposition.
  • Sox fans often accuse Jerry Manuel of running the team like a Little League club--and today it worked Everybody plays, and everybody hits! The biggest Little Leaguer of all, Aaron Rowand, collects 3 hits and 3 RBIs, one coming with a (gasp) bases-loaded walk. Bet Jerry's buying him ice cream with sprinkles tonight! Magglio Ordonez adds 2 hits and 3 runs scored, and was the guy to get the party started on the right foot with an RBI single in the first inning.
  • Let's add Miguel Olivo to the list of Cub-killers (along with Carlos Lee, Jose Valentin and Slappy Caruso). The redhot catcher belts a grand slam in the first inning that pretty much put the game out of reach. Frank Thomas gets props for 2 walks and a double that led to his scoring the first run of the game.
  • Game 2 of the intracity grudge match is tomorrow afternoon at Wrigley. Two of last year's studs turned this year's duds, Mark Buerhle and Matt Clement square off in front of a national audience. Let's take this one, too!
