Boston Batters Sox!

June 17th vs Boston

Today's temperature:
"Jerry's boys regress to form. Maybe if everyone had better defined roles, they wouldn't be so inconsistent."

Short Take: Burkett Leaves Bats Baffled

One of the oldest cliches around says that if you don't like the way the weather is in Chicago, wait 15 minutes and it's sure to change. Apparently the same can be said for Chicago's own White Sox. After an impressive outing last night against the Boston Red Sox, the 'Hose regress to their usual form and show why they're scuffling their way through the season while the Red Sox keep pace with the mighty Bronx Bombers in the AL East. The Sox start off the game with 4 straight doubles and jump to a quick 3-0 lead before the wheels fall off the wagon. The Carmines counter with a pair of solo home runs in the second and a 3-run Manny Ramirez blast in the third and take a lead they would never relinquish. Boston starter John Burkett settles down after his rough start and retires 18 Sox in a row as the Corpseball Express makes yet another stop on the South Side. How is it that this team can beat Pedro Martinez yet can't get a win off a grizzly old geezer who looks like he's ready for a retirement villa?

Bartolo Colon is faced to eat yet another loss he probably doesn't deserve. If El Barto has any common sense, he's talking to Grady Little right now trying to negotiate a trade to the BoSox. Colon strikes out 9, but also gives up 3 costly homers. Damaso Marte looked unspectacular in relief as well, giving up 2 runs in the 9th and pretty much shutting the door on the glimmer of hope the Sox had in a one run game. Is Damaso the Indestructible starting to burn out? He sure is getting a lot of use. More importantly, is Colon OK..what was up with that lengthy meeting with Herm Schneider early in the game?

At least the Sox offense showed up for 1 inning today, too bad they had to play 8 more. The top 4 spots in the lineup each doubled to stake a 3-0 lead early on, but there was nothing doing after that until a Brian Daubach HR in the 8th which was quickly rendered meaningless. The umpiring tonight was TERRIBLE, with Eric "It's Foul" Cooper making it seem like home plate was 3 feet wide with some of his terrible called 3rd strikes. Frank Thomas tried to call him out on it and got tossed. Did the ejection of the Sox slugger fire the team up? Of course not! Magglio Ordonez gets a gold star for being the only Sox hitter with 2 base hits, while Thomas, Paul Konerko, Carlos Lee and Jose Valentin each manage multiple strikeouts.

The 4 game set continues tomorrow night at US Cellular Field as Estaban Loiaza squares off against old school knuckler Tim Wakefield.

Tinkerer Update:
Olivo back behind the plate, Rios, Daubach, and Paul see action late
