Long Ball!

June 14th Vs. San Diego

Today's temperature:
"Nice to beat San Diego, but this was an ugly win."

Short Take:  Sox hit 3 home runs to overcome more mental lapses.

The Sox really tried to help San Diego out tonight. They made every kind of mistake a team can. They ran into outs. They made bad decisions. They allowed the Padres to steal home and they committed an error on a potential game ending DP ball that ended with everyone safe and the meat of the Padres order coming up. Yet still they won. Thanks to 3 home runs and some patience at the plate, the Sox made the most of the hits they got to score 6 runs on just 6 hits. Maybe they should just become a station to station team for a while until they become more reliable on the base paths or at least until Frank, Maggs and Carlos cool off just a bit.

Danny Wright looked sharp for 5 innings tonight, giving up 2 runs on 2 hits. One of them scoring on a practiced play. With men on the corners and 2 outs in the 4th, Dan Wright appeared to pick off Ryan Klesko at first. The minute the ball hit Frank Thomas' mitt, Mark Loretta - on third - broke for home. Frank never even looked that way, throwing to Graffanino, who ran down Klesko, but only after the tying run had crossed the plate. This was after the Sox had run into two outs of their own earlier in the game. Wright faltered in the 6th and left with the score tied and a man on second. Sox fans were shocked but very happy to watch Rick White actually pitch well for the next 1 2/3 innings, but the Sox still ended up losing 5-4 in the 8th. But never fear, Sox fans. The Sox smacked 3 home runs, each one to take the lead. Magglio's opened the scoring in the second, then after the Padres tied it up in the 4th, Carlos Lee crushed one into the stands in the bottom half after Frank got hit by a pitch and Maggs drew a walk. Then when all looked lost after the Padres took the lead in the top of the 8th, Tony Graffanino singled with one out in the bottom half and Frank Thomas on a 1-1 count turned on an inside fastball, sending it screaming over the left field fence for the final two runs of the game. Of course no Sox 1-run win would be complete without an error in the ninth inning by D'Angelo Jimenez (just in the game after pinch hitting for Jose Valentin in the 8th). The error was sandwiched between a pair of walks by Billy Koch, who, after sending Sox fans running for the liquor cabinet in a panic, managed to nail down his 8th save of the year and the Sox had won one ugly... Hey, that sounds like a slogan, maybe they could market it...

The middle of the lineup is on fire. Frank, Magglio Ordonez and Carlos Lee had another great game, driving in all 6 run and scoring 5 of them with just 3 thunderous swings. Too bad the baserunning let them down tonight or this might have been a much higher scoring game. Jon Garland goes on Father's Day for the sweep. Hopefully the big men can keep on bashing the ball and the Sox can find a way to be a bit more patient on the base paths.

Tinkerer Update:
It's not so much the occasional Josh Pauls and daily lineup adjustment, but what is with the infield shift? Going to have to change this feature to "Shifty's Update".
