Sox Smack Padres!

June 13th vs San Francisco

Today's temperature:
"Wow, we actually showed up to beat a mediocre team"

Short Take: Friday the 13th proves lucky for Sox.

  • Hey Sox fans! Maybe this team has a little resiliency after all. After last night's heartbreaker, the White Sox get it together and squeak by San Diego, 5-3.
  • Estaban Loaiza had an off night and left after 5 innings with what looks like a balky shoulder. Even on an off night where he gave up 3 early runs, he still fans 4 and gives up only one walk--for some Sox hurlers, that's considered a career outing. (Are you reading this, Danny Wright?) Tom Gordon earns the win, as he and Damaso Marte combine for 3 innings of scoreless ball before Billy Koch nails down the save.
  • Tonight's heroes are the heart of the Sox order: Magglio Ordonez, Carlos Lee and Armando Rios. The 3 amigos in the outfield each collect two hits, with Rios driving a home run over the CF fence to give the 'Hose the lead.
  • Frank Thomas continues to prove that when his butt is on the field, his head is in the game. The Big Hurt gets another start at first base tonight, hits an insurance homer in the 8th inning (his second in 2 days) and raises his average to .283. Would you believe that's the best average on this team right now?
  • It's also nice to see Paul Konerko turn in a decent performance tonight with a hit and 2 RBI, the latter coming on a sacrifice fly. It seems so rare that Konerko actually hits the ball out of the infield, so this is a moment to be savored.
  • Same 2 teams square off tomorrow night at US Cellular Field. Danny Wright takes the hill for the Sox on Caribbean night--forecast calls for plenty of fat guys in ugly shirts.

Tinkerer Update:
Valentin at SS, Rios in CF.
