WSI News - Totally Biased Game Recaps

This Must Be A Bad Dream

June 12th vs San Francisco

Today's temperature:
"Manuel will be second guessed for pitching to Bonds in the 9th."

Short Take:  Sox blow the game in the 9th in a disastrous loss.

  • Surely, things couldn’t get much worse after the way the Sox lost on Wednesday night, could they? Well for 8 innings it certainly looked better than Wednesday and the Sox looked to be on their way to a series win over the Giants. But not so fast, this isn’t just any team we’re talking about here. This is the Chicago White Sox. A team that has found many different ways to lose games that seemingly should have been won. And tonight was no different as the Sox would lose 8-4.
  • So what happened you’re probably wondering by now. Why did the Sox seemingly have a win through 8 innings but end up losing 8-4? Well, the Sox forgot that to win a game, you must play 9 complete innings, not 8. A complete collapse by the pitching staff. We’ve seen it before Sox fans, but this one just seems a lot worse.
  • The Sox started off well getting a 2-run home run from Frank Thomas in the 1st to grab an early lead. Bartolo Colon would give one back in the top of the 3rd, but the Sox quickly responded back in the bottom half of the inning by plating 2 of their own to grab a 4-1 lead. The Giants received another run courtesy of a homer by Jose Cruz Jr. to make it a 4-2 game, but the Sox still seemed in control. And that would last until the 9th inning….when he came up.
  • You probably know who “he” is but just in case you don’t…Barry Bonds. Colon came out to start the 9th in an attempt to record another complete game. But after allowing Ray Durham to single, Bonds came to the plate. Decision time for Manuel. Do you pitch to Barry with 1st base not open, or do you go ahead and walk him? Manuel decided to allow Colon to pitch to Bonds. Colon had struck out Bonds in his first 3 plate appearances, but Bonds would not be fooled for a 4th time. Bonds got a first pitch fastball to his liking and drove it to right center field for a game tying blast.
  • Colon would load the bases before being yanked and allowing Damaso Marte to come on. Marte immediately gave up a grand slam to pinch hitter Rich Aurilia to all but end the game. The Sox did nothing in the bottom of the 9th and lost the game by the final of 8-4. Just a heartbreaking lose for Sox fans to watch as it looked like the Sox would take this game, only to watch them blow it in the 9th and not even keep it close.
  • It’s hard to view anything positively in this game but Joe Crede had a big game going 3-4 with 2 RBI which helped to give the Sox their 4-1 lead. Colon pitched well through 8 innings having given up only 2 runs and striking out 8. But as you know by now, he would give up 5 in the 9th in only 1/3 of an inning to finish with a line of 8 and 1/3 innings pitched and 7 runs allowed.
  • The Sox move on to face the San Diego Padres at home with Esteban Loaiza facing Kevin Jarvis at 7:05 cst tomorrow. After a tough lose, the Sox look to their best pitcher on the year to help attempt to right the Sox sinking ship.

Tinkerer Update:
Konerko starts at DH and Graffanino at SS.
