Bonds Away!

June 11th vs San Francisco

Today's temperature:
"Jerry can only be thankful that he doesn't have to face Barry Bonds every night."

Buehrle is awful and the Sox get crushed.

  • Pathetic. Embarrassing. Dreadful. Pick whatever adjective you would like to, but the bottom line is this game was flat out bad to watch. White Sox supposed ace Mark Buehrle pitched more like a joker tonight. This time Buehrle gave up 8 runs in 4 and 2/3 innings. The 8 runs included a Grand Slam by Pedro Feliz in the 1st inning, a 2-run single by ex-White Sox Ray Durham in the 5th, and a 2-run home run by the very next batter in the 5th, Barry Bonds. The final result was a 11-4 White Sox loss. Somewhere Jerry Reinsdorf is laughing and thanking Mark Buehrle for not signing that long term contract in the off season.
  • The Sox offense wasn’t about to come back from that deficit. As a matter of fact, the Sox didn’t get their first hit until the 5th when Armando Rios singled. That would be the only hit until the 8th inning. But after the way the first 4 and ½ innings went, Sox fans had to be getting that feeling that the Sox might not get a single hit in the game.
  • As for the meaningless offense that the Sox did provide in the 8th inning. Jose Valentin doubled home Josh Paul for the first run of the game. After an error allowed Frank Thomas to reach, Aaron Rowand hit a 3-run home run to make the score 11-4. The Sox would get a few more hits in the 8th and 9th innings, but it hardly matter as it was definitely too little, too late. For once, maybe the Sox can put some of these innings together earlier in the game when it really matters.
  • Rick White actually managed to pitch 2 full innings and allow only 1 run. The outing dropped White’s ERA to 7.87. Gary Glover one the other hand was not as successful. Glover gave up 2 runs in his 1 inning of work as he could not stop the bleeding that had been started by Buehrle. Kelly Wunsch pitched a scoreless 2/3 of an inning and David Sanders pitched a perfect inning of relief. The Sox used 5 pitchers to give up 11 runs. On the same night, the Astros used 6 pitchers to no-hit the Yankees. Sox fans can only dream of a White Sox pitcher throwing a no-hitter at this point.
  • Magglio Ordonez returned to the lineup tonight a day after being scratched due to illness. Ordonez continued to struggle though going 0-3 before being removed for Aaron Rowand. Maggs now has only 5 hits in his last 39 at-bats. However, Brian Daubach continued to play well as he went 1-2 in the game with 2 walks.
  • Former White Sox Ray Durham looked to show the Sox what they are missing, and he did just that. Durham collected 2 hits in 3 at-bats. Durham scored 2 runs and drove in 3. A painful reminder for Sox fans, especially as D’Angelo Jimenez was busy going 0-5 on the night.
  • The Sox send Bartolo Colon out to face Kirk Rueter in the rubber match of the series tomorrow at 7:05 cst. The Sox are going to need a good start out of Colon in order to help forget this awful game.

Tinkerer Update:
Daubach starts at DH, Josh Paul actually makes it into the game.
