WSI News - Totally Biased Game Recaps

Wright On!

June 5th at Arizona

Today's temperature:
"His lineup changes worked this game and the pitching certainly helped."

Solid pitching and timely hitting help the Sox pull one out in extra innings.

  • The Sox finally played a game worth watching against the Diamondbacks as they managed to win in extra innings by a final of 3-2. It wasn’t the best the Sox could have played but the bottom line is they got in done when it mattered to manage a win out of this series. The pitching was there though the Sox offense couldn’t manage to put up many runs. Still, they managed to put up a very important run in the 10th inning to win the game.
  • Dan Wright had a good outing on Thursday by going 6 innings and allowing only 2 runs. Those 2 runs came off solo home runs by Junior Spivey and Tony Womack. Wright struck out 4 and walked only 1. His 3 hits allowed would be the only hits the Dbacks would record on the night. Wright failed to win his first game of the year, but pitched well enough to keep the Sox in it and with any decent run support, would have gotten the win.
  • The Sox offense managed 11 hits and 4 walks but only plated 3 runners on the night. The first run of the game came off the bat of Frank Thomas. Thomas hit a solo shot in the 6th inning with the Sox trailing 1-0 at that point. After a Magglio Ordonez ground out, Brian Daubach would take his turn and knock out his first home run of the year- a solo blast- to make it 2-1 Sox. But the Dbacks countered in the bottom half of the inning to tie the game.
  • That tie would last until the 10th. Tony Graffanino, starting at second base, singled with one out. Thomas came calling again and this time knocked a double in left field. Graffanino raced home to score and give the Sox a 3-2 lead. Billy Koch would shut the Dbacks down in the bottom of the 10th and the Sox gave joy to all those who stayed up to watch this game.
  • Credit the bullpen for holding onto this game. Jerry Manuel used his best reliever, Damaso Marte for the 7th and 8th and Marte was perfect not allowing a hit or walk and striking out 3. Koch pitched the 9th and 10th to earn his second win of the year and Koch was impressive as well. He did allow one walk but that was all as he shut down the Dback hitters for 2 innings.
  • Manuel’s lineup changes worked for this game. Daubach, starting in place of Lee, had a big home run to give the Sox a short lived lead. Jose Valentin batted in the leadoff spot and was 2-4 with a walk. Graffanino, starting at 2nd, was 2-5 and scored the game winning run. It wasn’t the best way to win Sox fans, but we’ll certainly take it with the way this team has played of late.
  • The Sox now travel to Los Angeles to start a series at 9:10 cst tomorrow against the Dodgers. Mark Buehrle starts for the Sox against Kazuhisa Ishii of the Dodgers. Buehrle is still looking for his 3rd win of the year, and will need more help from his teammates this time around.

Tinkerer Update:
Daubach in Left and Valentin leads off.
