Evaluating the trades

by Soxheads of the WSI message boards

The year 2001 will go down in White Sox history as the year of the torn
labrum, as nearly every Sox pitcher managed to come down with this
misfortune. Countless members of the team managed to have something bruised, sprained, or strained, and ended up taking up room on the DL. Our DL started having more players on it than our bench. Many times this year a
certain GM and manager duo left us scratching our heads when we watched the starting lineups on tv or saw them at the game:

Starting in Center Field: Julio Ramirez .089, 0 HR 2 RBI

Starting at Designated Hitter: Harold Baines .102, 0 HR 1 RBI

Starting at Shortstop: Royce Clayton: Royce Clayton, .189, 0 HR 7 RBI

Of course these weren't their final stats, or at least Royce's, as he
managed to bring it back up over .250.

While we are on the topic of head scratchers, lets talk about trades. First
we'll categorize each trade on scale of one to five:

Acquired pitcher Gary Glover from the Toronto Blue Jays for pitcher Scott Eyre.

This trade turned out better than expected for the Sox as Glover became a
valueable member of the bullpen and spot starter a la Sean Lowe.
Rating: 4

Acquired catcher Miguel Olivo from the Oakland Athletics.

For getting Olivo for Bradford (otherwise known as practically nothing) this
trade ended up well with a high-level Minor-League prospect.
Rating: 4

Acquired shortstop Royce Clayton from the Texas Rangers for minor league pitchers Aaron Myette and Brian Schmack.

This is where we start scratching our heads. While Royce did end the year
on a good note, he was plagued with a bat as bad as Julio's during the first
half. Myette is still with the Rangers as a starter. One team's trash is another team's number five starter.
Rating: 2

Acquired pitchers David Wells and Matt DeWitt from the Toronto Blue Jays for pitchers Mike Sirotka, Kevin Beirne and Mike Williams and outfielder Brian Simmons. (otherwise known as Shouldergate)

We gave up our number one and others for their number one and another, and
we never saw much of either. Sirotka came down with his torn labrum, bringing up the caveat emptor rule, while Wells back was in as bad of shape as the Devil Rays. Wells pitched rather ineffective while Sirotka didn't pitch. Good luck, Mike.
Rating: 2

Acquired pitcher Mike Rupp from the Boston Red Sox as the player to be named in a September 20 trade. (Jesus Peņa)

And neither was heard from since.
Rating: 1

Acquired pitcher Alan Embree and cash from the San Francisco Giants for minor league pitcher Derek Hasselhoff.

The White Sox give up a future closer for a now Howry.
Rating: 1

Acquired pitcher pitchers Onan Masaoka and Gary Majewski and outfielder Jeff Barry for James Baldwin

The Dodgers get a good pitcher for a couple of minor leaguers and the
infamous Barry.
Rating: 2

Some good news this season came in the form of Mark Buehrle. The burly-man was the ace this season, reminiscent of Sirotka a year earlier.

With possible contraction coming up the face of the A.L. Central may change. The face that won't change, though, is the face of that smirking injun.

The White Sox lineup will be shook up next year, with faces not seen in a long time, such as Thomas.

Well, that's all the ranting and raving I have for now. See you around.
