WSI News - Totally Biased Game Recaps

Lowest of the Low!

May 23rd vs Detroit

Today's temperature:
"Jerry chills and watches the game from home while suspended, but Nossek ain't any better."

Short Take:  Garland average, offense downright sucky.

  • Sox fans, was the lowest point of the season getting spanked on the West Coast? Was it getting swept by the Twins in the Humpdome last weekend? was tonight, losing to the doormats of major league baseball, the Detroit Tigers. Sox lose 3-2 and show about as much life as the Old Roman's corpse. Notably absent from the bench tonight was ol' Tinkeroo himself, Jerry Manuel, serving out his one game suspension.
  • The formerly hapless Tigers sent slug Mike Maroth to the hill tonight. Maroth was 0-9 entering tonight's tilt and proved that he was oh-so-hungry for a win. This guy induces groundouts like Mark Buerhle used to, and limits the Sox to 3 hits.
  • About the only good news for the 'Hose tonight was Jon Garland. Just when we thought it was safe for him to pack his bags for Charlotte, Big Jon comes through with a quality start, giving up 2 runs on 4 hits over 6 innings. Tom "So-So" Gordon eats the loss as the Sox D fails to tighten up late.
  • Not much offense tonight to gloat about. Joe Crede hits his first home run in what seems like 6 months and Mags Ordonez contributes an RBI double, but other than that corpseball continues to be the name of the game at the Cell. Wednesday's fair-haired boy Carlos Lee is Friday's goat turning in an 0 for 4 performance. Frank Thomas scores a run early, but strikes out twice late.
  • Guess who caught a plane up from Charlotte in time to go 0 for 3? Joltin' Joe Borchard, that's who. Joe strikes out swinging twice tonight with a swing that's better suited to a garden rake.
  • Finally, let's run through some defensive lowlights--throwing error by Crede, misjudged line shot at Lee, bobble by Valentin. Yuck..
  • Sox and Tigers square off again tomorrow night. Estaban Loaiza looks to pad his record and improve his trade value against the Tigers, who have now won 2 games in a row.

Tinkerer Update:
Nossek handles the tinkering tonight; Tony G leads off, Borchard slides into the 8 spot.
