Orioles Swept Away!

May 15th vs Baltimore

Today's temperature:
"Three excellent pitching performances have to make Jerry a little more comfortable. "

Short Take:† Bartolo comes up with a big outing to give the Sox the sweep.

  • Sox fans, remember what a sweep is? Well if you donít you can certainly be excused because the last time the Sox accomplished one was the second series of the year when they swept the awful Detroit Tigers. Tonight they managed to rack up their second series sweep of the year by knocking off the Orioles 8-2. Bartolo Colon was outstanding making for the 3rd consecutive strong start by a White Sox pitcher. Unfortunately, he would not be around to complete the game.
  • Colon would be ejected after hitting Jerry Hairston in the top of the 9th. The pitch came in retaliation for a Jorge Julio fastball that hit Magglio Ordonez in the back during the bottom of the 8th. The benches cleared and Jerry Manuel would be ejected but nothing more happened as the incident was really much ado about nothing. However, it was great to see Bartolo stand up for Maggs and show that you canít hit the Sox superstar and not expect retaliation. Sox fans, letís hope the Sox can carry this emotion over to the weekend series.
  • Colon pitched well as he finished up going 8 innings, allowing 2 runs, striking out 5, and walking only 1. The only runs Colon allowed came on a 2-run home run he allowed in the 2nd. But he would settle down and shut the Orioles down for the rest of the game. Kelly Wunsch quickly finished up the game by pitching yet another perfect inning in the 9th.
  • The Sox offense was disappointing early. They loaded the bases in the 2nd inning with no outs, but only managed to collect 1 run thanks to what seems like the 1000th double play the Sox have hit into this year. But Frank Thomas would tie up the game with another solo home run in the 3rd. Thomas continued to hit well in this game and finished 2-3 with 2 walks. His first walk of the game came in the 7th inning with the bases loaded, forcing home the go ahead run home.
  • The Sox really broke the game open with the very next batter. Magglio Ordonez stepped up looking to provide some insurance and did just that. Maggs smashed a line shot the center and Melvin Mora could not make the diving play. 3 runs scored as Maggs ended up with a triple. Two more hits in the inning by Carlos Lee and Paul Konerko would add more runs to make the score 8-2.
  • Willie Harris managed to do something he hasnít done much of this yearÖhit the damn ball! Harris singled in the 7th to start off the Sox rally as they would bat around in the inning with Harris making the last out. However, Joe Crede continued to struggle by going 0-4. This is to be expected out of Harris, but not out of Crede. Hopefully he can find his stroke in the BaggieDome in Minnesota.
  • The Sox are now back to .500 as they open a big series tomorrow in Minnesota against the Twinkies. Mark Buehrle will face Brad Radke at 7:05 cst. Buehrle has struggled this year but managed to win 5 games against the Twins last year. Letís hope Buehrle shows himself as a true ace tomorrow, Sox fans!

Tinkerer Update:
†Harris for some reason starts in center. Crede bats 7th and Olivo 8th.
