Wright Rights Sox Ship!

May 14th vs Baltimore

Today's temperature:
"Pitching like this helps to keep the pressure off Jerry, but can it continue?"

Short Take:  Danny Wright's great outing leads to a Sox victory as the Sox allowed only 1 run.

  • The Sox pitching was great throughout the game, but the offense looked sluggish for most of the game. The Sox jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead which held the same until the 7th inning. Danny Wright cruised through his 6 and 1/3 innings of work but would not qualify for the win. However, the Sox would win by a final of 5-1 as the Sox offense came through late to grab the lead which the bullpen held onto.
  • Danny Wright pitched great in this game. He shut the Orioles out until the 7th inning. Wright allowed a leadoff double in the 7th and a single by the next batter would tie the game. However, Magglio Ordonez made a great throw which led to Jay Gibbons being tagged out before reaching second. That would be the only run the Orioles would score because the bullpen took over and shut down the Orioles from there.
  • Frank Thomas led the Sox offensive attack tonight. He started off with a solo home run in the 1st to give the Sox the 1-0 lead they would keep until the 7th. Thomas singled in the 6th and doubled in the 7th to drive in his second run of the game. Sox fans, itís great to see Frank hit like this, isnít hit? Hopefully he can keep it going.
  • After the Orioles tied the game in the top half of the 7th inning, the Sox immediately responded to take the lead again. Paul Konerko was hit by a pitch to leadoff the inning and Willie Harris pinch ran for him. But the next two hitters would hit into outs and it looked like the Sox would squander another opportunity. But Sandy Alomar Jr., DíAngelo Jimenez, Jose Valentin, and Thomas would string together 4 consecutive hits to give the Sox the 5-1 lead. Yes, Sox fans, those really were White Sox players getting clutch hits.
  • While Wright pitched fantastic, he also got some help from the bullpen. Tom Gordon came in in the 7th after Wright allowed his only run of the game. Gordon allowed a single to the first batter he faced, but then settled down and retired every other batter he saw. Damaso Marte finished the game with a perfect 9th to preserve the Sox win.
  • This win brings the Sox to 19-20 on the year and 4.5 games out of first. Perhaps the best part of this win was that it kept the Sox from having the same record as the Orioles. Having a record as bad as the orange birds is not something that any team wants. Then again at this point are the Sox really that much better of a team than the Orioles?
  • The Sox look for the series sweep of the Orioles tomorrow at 7:05 cst. Bartolo Colon with take the mound for the Sox against Sidney Ponson for the Orioles. Colon, who pitched well in his last time out, will look to make it 3 consecutive strong outings by White Sox starting pitchers.

Tinkerer Update:
Pretty much normal. Rios in center; Lee bats 5th and Konerko 6th.
