Garland Fails Again

May 8th at Oakland

Today's temperature:
"Well, it's certainly not Jerry's fault that Jon Garland can't pitch. "

Short Take:  No pitching and the offense coming too late equates to a series lose.

  • Remember that whole thing yesterday about the offense being rejuvenated? Well the offense went back into its shell for most of this game about as quickly as a Willie Harris at-bat. The Sox put up some meaningless runs late in the game, but it was too little, too late as the Sox lost 8-5. Jon Garland disappointed yet again by allowing the A’s to get a 3-run lead that the Sox could not overcome.
  • Garland’s struggles continued in this game as he allowed 5 runs in 5 innings with the biggest shot a 3-run HR off the bat of Miguel Tejada. He continued to fall behind in the count and could not keep the runs from scoring. The bullpen wasn’t that much better but an error by Joe Crede did not help. Something must be done with Garland. Every time he goes to the mound these days, you just know the Sox are going to have to put up quite a few runs. It’s frustrating to watch.
  • The offense was quite complacent early on as the only runs the Sox scored came courtesy of a Magglio Ordonez 2-run home run in the 3rd inning. One positive note is that the Sox 3-6 hitters each collected 2 hits. The bad news is that there was rarely anyone on for them as they accounted for only 2 RBI. A day after reaching base in all 6 plate appearances, leadoff man Tony Graffanino failed to reach base in any at-bat.
  • The Sox provided a brief glimmer of hope in the 8th inning as they made a short lived attempt at a comeback. The rally started with no runners on and 2 outs. The Sox loaded the bases with 2 hits and a Hit By Pitch. D’Angelo Jimenez would walk to force home a run that made it 8-3. Brian Daubach would then pinch hit for Willie Harris and also draw a walk that made it 8-4. Unfortunately it was not to be as Graffanino would ground out to end the inning. Fittingly enough, the leadoff hitter in the 9th, Frank Thomas would hit a solo shot.
  • Who did Armando Rios upset to earn this treatment? He sat today once again while Willie Harris continues to struggle. Not only did he not start, but when Brian Daubach pinch hit for Harris, rather than send Rios out to play center Manuel put Daubach in right and shifted Maggs to center. Seattle is sending a righty to the bump for tomorrow’s game. If Rios doesn’t get the start, we know something is up.
  • Here’s a rarity…Billy Koch pitched a scoreless 9th inning. Meanwhile, the man he was traded for, Keith Foulke, recorded his 9th save though in shaky fashion. Be honest Sox fans, how many weren’t seeing flashbacks of the Twinkiedome explosion from a few years ago when Foulke stepped to the mound with the bases loaded in the 8th.
  • Danny Wright makes his season debut tomorrow when the Sox travel to Seattle for a 9:05 cst start. Ryan Franklin will go for the M’s as the Sox look to try to salvage this road trip by winning a series at Seattle. It’s not likely, but it would sure be helpful as this point.

Tinkerer Update:
Same lineup as yesterday but with Jimenez in for Valentin. Graffy moves over to short.
