WSI News - Totally Biased Game Recaps

Bullpen Struggles Continue

April 24th at Baltimore

Today's temperature:
"The heat keeps on rising as Jerry's team continues to show a lack of emotion and Jerry himself continues to have his bullpen let him down."

Short Take:  The bullpen blows another game and the Sox lose the series to the Orioles.

  • Another truly pathetic performance by the bullpen leads to another Sox lose. Josh Stewart was decent through 5 innings, allowing 2 runs, but often found himself trying to get out of jams. Once he left the game, the usual suspects again blew the game for the Sox leading to a 5-4 lose for the heartless White Sox. The Sox scored early and then put their bats to rest for the night.
  • Remember when this bullpen was supposed to be one of the best in the majors? Those days are long over and this bullpen is awful. Flush Gordon and Rick White combined to blow this game. When it’s not Billy Koch it’s White or Gordon. The only steady pitcher in the bullpen continues to be Kelly Wunsch who pitched another scoreless inning in today’s game.
  • Jose Valentin collected another extra base hit, hitting his 5th homerun of the year in the 3rd inning. He struck out in all of his other at-bats but his homerun gave the Sox a 2 run lead which they held until Rick White entered the game. Carlos Lee started the Sox scoring in the 2nd with a double following up Paul “The Human Double Play” Konerko‘s double. Lee later scored on a sacrifice fly by Joe Crede. What do you know, the Sox actually know what a sacrifice fly is!
  • But the big story of this game was how bad the Sox bullpen continues to perform. Rick White entered the game at the start of the 7th attempting to hold a 4-2 lead. As you know by now, he didn’t. Instead White allowed a leadoff homerun to Deivi Cruz to cut the lead to 4-3. A strikeout and a double later, White was pulled by White Sox over-manager Jerry Manuel. It was now time for Gordon to do his part in blowing the game. Gordon struck out the first man he faced and it looked like he might just get out of it. But that wouldn’t happen because the next batter, Gary Matthews Jr., hit the game winning 2 run homerun.
  • The Sox heart of the order continued to perform below their abilities in this game, but the same can not be said about D’Angelo Jimenez and Armando Rios. These two continue to shine with Jimenez collecting two hits and scoring a run, and Rios going 1-3. Sox fans can only hope that Manuel will make Rios the starting centerfielder sometime soon.
  • When will Paul Konerko finally start hitting? His play right now is extremely frustrating to watch with him seemingly hitting into a double play in every key situation. Konerko did it once again today in the 8th inning. With the Sox trailing 5-4 Magglio Ordonez singled to start off the 8th inning and provided some hope for whatever Sox fans had not turned off the game in disgust. But only moments later Konerko grounded into a double play which effectively ended any chance the Sox had to get back into the game. Unfortunately, Konerko’s backup, Brian Daubach is doing even worse. He pinch hit in the 9th and struck out looking to end the game and is now batting .053.
  • The Sox go home to start a 3 game home series against their biggest enemies, the Minnesota Twins. Luckily, for Sox fans, the Twins are also struggling and are just 9-12 after their lose to the Royals today. The Twins will come out playing with emotion in this series so let’s hope the heartless White Sox can do the same for once. The series begins at 7:05 cst tomorrow with Mark Buehrle going against Joe “Cy” Mays.

Tinkerer Update:
Rios in center, and surprisingly no changes otherwise.

Put the Sox in a position to win but unfortunately he doesn't pitch out of the bullpen.
