Loiaza Shuts Down O's!

April 22nd at Baltimore

Today's temperature:
70
"Nothing like a 4 game winner to cool things down"

Short Take: Loaiza is a risin'

  • It doesn't matter how cold it is in April, Estaban Loiaza is just plain hot! The veteran Sox righty shuts down the Orioles as the Sox cruise to a 3-1 win at Camden Yards. Estaban goes 8 1/3 innings, fanning 8 and scattering 3 hits. His ERA drops to 1.24, and he's one of only two AL pitchers with 4 wins in the young season.
  • The Orioles's offense was pretty much asleep for the entire game until a Jay Gibbons HR in the 9th finally put the O's on the board.
  • Frank Thomas was the spark plug for the Sox offense tonight. A solo HR in the 1st put the Sox ahead to get things rolling, and a double in the 9th led to the final Sox run of the game.
  • Joe Crede did his part to help the Pale Hose with an RBI double. Is Jumpin' Joe finally starting to get back the form he showed off the first few games of the season? Maybe he caught a case of the hot bat from his neighbor in the lineup Carlos Lee. El Caballo didn't homer tonight, but contributed a single, stolen base, and run scored. Paul Konerko also added an RBI single, which makes up for his grounding into a double play earlier on. Here's hoping Paulie starts doing less of the former--he seems to have a real problem with that this year.
  • O-E-O! Magglio Ordonez extended his hitting streak to 18 games. In case some of you are wondering, (I was) the record for longest hitting streak by a Sox player is 27, shared by Albert Belle and Luke Appling.
  • Aaron Rowand got the start in CF tonight, and in typical Aaron Rowand fashion put up a big 0 against the O's. His batting average over the past week is .000. You can;t get any worse than that.
  • Billy Koch picked up his third save of the season tonight. But it wasn't pretty, as he walked one and gave up a LOOOOOOONG fly ball that Carlos Lee had to grab at the track.
  • Game 2 of this 3 game set tomorrow night at the Yards. Bartolo Colon takes the hill for the Sox.
