Cleveland Rocks Sox

April 21st vs Cleveland

Today's temperature:
"It's not Jerry's fault that Garland can't pitch, but with more performances like today Jerry will take the blame."

Short Take:  Garland is awful early; Sox out of the game by the 3rd inning.

  • Sox fans, if you missed this game consider yourself lucky. This was a hard game to watch as the Sox never seemed to care. They fell behind early and could never get back into this game, losing 9-2 to the Indians. Sox pitching, led by starter Jon “Deer in Headlights” Garland failed to hold the Indians down and the Sox offense didn’t produce nearly enough. The Tribe came ready to play and dominated the Sox on both sides hitting 4 homeruns while Jake Westbrook shut down Sox hitters. Nothing like some good old-fashioned corpse ball for a Monday afternoon game.
  • It’s starts like these that make Sox fans wonder if Garland will ever live up to expectations. In his last outing Garland pitched great against the Royals, looking as if he might be starting to find his groove and then this happens… 5 runs given up in 2 and 2/3 innings, also walking 2 and allowing 2 HR’s. A sickening sight to see for Sox fans. At this rate, if anyone deserves to lose their spot to Danny Wright it is Garland.
  • Give credit to Rick White and Kelly Wunsch for taking mop-up duty. White entered the game in the 3rd and went for 3 and 1/3 innings. He did give up 2 runs, but ate some innings and took one for the team. Wunsch followed White and pitched 2 full innings. See Jerry, Wunsch can do more than pitch to one hitter.
  • Streaky: Magglio Ordonez extended his hitting streak to 17 games with a double over the head of Matt Lawton. Meanwhile, Carlos Lee homered for the 5th consecutive game. His 2-run HR in the 6th accounted for all of the Sox scoring. Suggestion for Jerry Manuel: Since you like to tinker with the lineup so much, how about moving Carlos Lee up in front of the struggling Paul Konerko to take advantage of Lee’s hot streak.
  • Struggling: Brian Daubach went 0-4 once again and is now batting a measly .056 on the season. Kinda makes Sox fans miss Jeff Liefer. Billy Koch has been atrocious recently. Koch pitched the 9th today and gave up 2 more runs which drove his ERA to 8.68! He has to turn it around quick for the Sox bullpen to be successful.
  • Why can’t the Sox manage to stop Karim Garcia? Garcia hit 2 more HR’s today which gives him 3 in the past two days against the Sox and 9 HR’s against the Sox in the past three years, more than he has hit against any other team. Add him to the list of guys that the Sox can’t stop.
  • The Sox now travel to Baltimore for a 3 game series against the Orioles. With a home series against the Twinkies starting Friday, the Sox must get some momentum from this series to take into Friday’s game. Esteban Loaiza gets his 4th start tomorrow at 6:05 cst as he looks for his 4th win.

Tinkerer Update:
Graffanino starts at 3B; Daubach in RF as Ordonez DH's in place of Thomas.
