Buehrle Bashed!

April 20 versus Cleveland

Today's temperature:
"Jerry's boys struggled at the plate, lack of discipline costing them opportunities. With the Royals winning again the Sox fall to 3.5 back."

Short Take: Buehrle gets shelled and offense struggles in Sox loss.

Sox fans had to feel good after the team won the first two games of the series and Mark Buehrle going for the series victory at Soxpark, but things got off to a rough start. The Tribe sent 9 men to the plate in the top of the first and homered twice, but fortunately they left the bases loaded and got the minimum to show for their efforts - 3 runs. Buehrle struggled all day long with his control giving up 11 hits, 2 walks and 3 home runs over 4 and a third innings and leaving the game losing 6-1. His sinker was up all day long and the Jndjans took full advantage. Meanwhile, Sox hitters were showing little of the patience that has been their trademark this season, often bailing out the Tribe pitchers by swinging at pitches that were well outside the strike zone and doing little with the opportunities they did get. The only guy to take a walk was Sandy Alomar. Why do they struggle so much with these soft-tossing, no-name pitchers?

The Sox defense was solid today, turning 4 double plays in the first 7 innings, but the story of the series continues to be Milton "Which way did that ball go" Bradley who again played two more solidly hit balls into doubles when they should have been outs. This guy may be leading the American League in hits, but he needs glasses or something. At the least he should be playing a different position - like maybe catcher where the odds on him misplaying a line drive that is straight at him into a hit seem remote at best but, after watching him play center, even that seems unlikely. Still, the defense wasn't the story today for either team.

Gary Glover looked sharp today, going 2.2 innings while giving up only 2 hits and striking out 3. His curve ball was as nasty as I've seen him throw in a long time - lots of snap. D'Angelo Jimenez continued to impress, looking flawless in the field and going 3-4 at the plate. He continues to make Sox fans say, "Ray Who?" Unfortunately he had almost half the teams hits through 8 innings. Carlos Lee had another home run and Armando Rios added a couple of hits and an RBI, but it wasn't enough. Frank Thomas failed to reach base for the first time this season in a game he played. Jon Garland goes tomorrow as the Sox try to win their 5th straight series.

Tinkerer Update:
Rios looking sharp in CF also drove in a run in this game. Is it time to make this CF platoon a thing of the past?
