WSI News - Totally Biased Game Recaps

All Shook up!

April 16th vs Kansas City

Today's temperature:
"The team continues to struggle with fundamentals, but at least they won. Thursday's rubber match will show how much heart this team has."

Short Take:  Sox blow a late inning lead again, but late inning offensive heroics lead to a White Sox win.

  • This was definitely one of those edge of your seat type games but this time the White Sox were able to pull it out, 4-3. Sox fans have become used to these games where it seems like the Sox will somehow find a way to blow the game. But in the bottom of the 9th, the Sox were able to win it! This may have not been a pretty win but it will count just the same and with the way the Sox have played against the Royals this year, Sox fans will take it! The Sox finally got to Royals starter Runelvys “Elvis” Hernandez who had dominated the Sox so far this year. Hernandez allowed 3 runs over 6 innings as he struggled all night long. Sox starter Jon Garland pitched much better than his previous two outings and kept the Sox in line for the much needed win.
  • Another positive from the night: There were no drunken morons running out onto the field tonight! Though based on the pictures of the game, the security personnel may have outnumbered the fans. Let’s hope that the Sox winning ways are the thing getting them publicity for the rest of the year and not some idiots running onto the field.
  • Jon Garland pitched brilliantly tonight! Garland went 7 strong innings, allowing only 1 run and striking out 6, while walking 2. When he left the game the Sox were leading 3-1 and it looked as if Garland would get his first win of the young season. Damaso Marte had other ideas though. Marte walked the leadoff man in the 8th and allowed a HR to Angel Berroa to tie the game and give Garland a No Decision. Marte did not record an out but Tom Gordon did and he pitched very well in relief. Gordon replaced Marte after allowing a single to Michael Tucker and pitched 2 perfect innings to record his first win as a member of the White Sox.
  • The hitting in this game was not great but it was just good enough to win. The Sox put up a 3 spot in the 4th inning thanks to some poor defense and pitching by the Royals. There were 2 walks and 2 errors in the inning. The big hit came off the bat off Magglio Ordonez. With runners on 1st and 3rd, Maggs hit a ground rule double to center to score the Sox first run. Errors by Angel Berroa and Mike Sweeney gave the Sox two more runs and the Sox grabbed a 3-1 lead until Marte blew the lead. If the Sox can't produce their own runs, some poor pitching and defense by the Royals will sure do the trick. Thank you Royals players!
  • But the biggest play of the game came in the bottom of the 9th with the game tied 3-3. This wasn't exactly the best way to win, but it worked for Sox fans! Joe Crede led off the 9th with a solid single past Smilin’ Joe Randa. Tony Graffanino would pinch run for him and that proved to be a good move by Jerry Manuel. The next batter Miguel Olivo laid the bunt down but when Royals pitcher Jason Grimsley fielded the bunt, he threw a palm ball into right field to allow the runners to move to 2nd and 3rd. An intentional walk later the bases were loaded and this was the time for the Sox to finally come up clutch! But not without some nervousness for Sox fans first. Jose Valentin failed to do the job. Sox fans had to be feeling nervous about this one. The next batter, Frank Thomas, would hit a shallow pop up to right field, but Michael Tucker had a hard time playing the ball in the wind and couldn't get in a position to make a good throw to home. Graffanino took off and the ball never made it to home plate as Graffy scored! White Sox winner! Woohoo!
  • It’s nice to see that other teams besides the Sox can lose games due to poor defense. The Royals committed 3 errors and had problems throwing and fielding all night long. Their pitching didn't help much either as they allowed 8 walks on the night.
  • The Sox look to win the series tomorrow as Esteban Loaiza, looking to go 3-0, faces Chris George at 1:05 CST. The Sox need to win this series so lets hope they show up ready to kick some Royal butt.

Tinkerer Update:
Daubach starts at 1B for Konerko, Rios continues to start in CF.
