WSI News - Totally Biased Game Recaps

Injun Express Crushes Sox

April 9th at Cleveland

Today's temperature:
"Sox couldn't get over the hump tonight in Cleweland. Back to .500, but the team is showing signs of life."

Short Take: Sox can't do much right as Indians control the game from beginning to end.

  • The White Sox came into this game looking for their 5th consecutive win and did not come close to doing so. The Sox never gave Sox fans a reason to believe they were going to win this one. The Indians controlled the game from the 1st inning and defeated the Sox 5-2. Jon Garland was disappointing for the second time in as many outings on the year. This certainly isn't what Sox fans were hoping to see from Garland. But Garland didn't receive much help from the offense.
  • While the Sox lost the game on their own, the umpiring in this game was less than spectacular. Home plate umpire Brian Runge was inconsistent with his strike zone and blew a call at home plate in the bottom of the 7th inning. With 2 outs and a runner on 3rd, Omar Vizquel flied out to shallow right center field. White Sox centerfielder Aaron Rowand caught the ball and made a throw directly to home. Catcher Josh Paul had to go to his right to catch the ball but came back and made the tag on Brandon Phillips before Phillips touched the plate. Runge blew the call, but that wasn't the reason the Sox lost.
  • The real reason the Sox lost this game was their lackluster performance on offense. The Sox had 17 runners left on base in this game. Every starter had at least 1 LOB and only Frank Thomas had multiple hits. The Sox offense woes also included a lack of hustle on the part of D’Angelo Jimenez. Trailing 3-1 in the 3rd inning, Jimenez was on 3rd base when Magglio Ordonez flied out to center. Jimenez tagged on the play but was not running at full speed and was consequently thrown out at home.
  • Jon Garland, who many Sox fans are expecting to break out this year, has now strung together two poor starts to start the season and he currently carries a 9.00 ERA. Garland, who led the Sox in walks last year, walked 4 in this game after walking only 1 in his first start of the year. Luckily though, the Sox bullpen looked good tonight. Rick White looked sharp in his 1 and 1/3 innings tonight. If only the starting pitching was pitching this well…
  • One of the few positives in this game came off the bat of Paul Konerko. In the 2nd inning Konerko lit up Cleveland starter Brian Anderson for a solo home run, his first on the season. Sox fans, let’s hope this will help Konerko get going! With the 1-3 performance Konerko is only hitting .148 through 8 games. Unfortunately, Konerko isn't even the member of the White Sox who is playing the worst right now.
  • Carlos Lee watch: Carlos Lee drew the collar once again today as he went 0-4 dropping his average to .077 and left 3 on base. Hey, at least he didn't strike out! It’s starting to seem as if the same thing can be said of Lee each night. Maybe Jerry Manuel will give Brian Daubach a start in left one of these days. However, Lee is going to have to start hitting. If nothing else, he needs to at least raise his trade value.
  • The Sox look to take the rubber match against Cleveland tomorrow at 6:05 CST. Esteban Loaiza will pitch for the Sox against Jason Davis of the Indians. With the way the Sox offense is looking right now, Loaiza is going to have to pitch well because he can't rely on his offense for too much support.

Tinkerer Update:
Graffanino starts at short; Josh Paul gets a start behind the plate.
