Bullpen Meltdown!

April 3rd at Kansas City

Today's temperature:
"The team has played poorly, but even Jerry can't be blamed when the bullpen implodes like that. Still, the team looks lifeless."

Short Take:  Bullpen can't hold lead, Sox swept in Kansas City.

  • The question on most Sox fans minds heading into today's game was something along the lines of "The Sox couldn't really be swept by the Royals to start the season, could they?" Well, the answer was a resounding "Yes!" as the Sox pitching and defense failed them in a horrible display of how not to play the game. In the end the Sox lost by a score of 12-6 which drops them 0-3 on the season.
  • This was supposed to be Jon Garland's time to shine. After an 0-2 start, Garland had a chance to step up big and give the White Sox a much needed win. Unfortunately, Garland failed to do so. He lasted only 4 innings as he gave up 5 runs. But Garland wasn't even the reason the Sox lost this game.
  • The Sox defense played about as bad as they possibly could today. By the time they were done the Sox had committed 4 errors though there could have been more. Jose Valentin, and D'Angelo Jimenez, each committed an error and Joe Crede committed two. Among the Sox defensive woes was a dropped fly ball which neither Miguel Olivo nor Joe Crede bothered to call. Both Paul Konerko and Crede allowed balls to go under their glove, but Konerko wasn't given an error (most likely out of pity by the official scorer). Jimenez bobbled a ball, and Valentin committed a throwing error.
  • But, the biggest disappointment in this game didn't come until the 8th inning. The Sox entered the inning leading 6-5 and needing only 6 outs for their first win. Then the bullpen completely imploded. Tom Gordon started the inning and was actually able to retire a batter! Mike Sweeney then came to the plate with 1 out and a questionable call may have helped swing the balance of the game. On a 3-2 count, first base umpire Tony Randazzo said Sweeney checked his swing, even though replays seemed to show otherwise and Randazzo had rung up Frank Thomas on an almost identical check the inning before. Damaso Marte entered the game and got the second out but then walked the next guy to load the bases. Major off-season acquisition Billy Koch was brought on to try to end the inning, but failed miserably. For Sox fans, the pain of watching the rest the rest of the inning felt like a root canal. Koch faced 6 batters total and did not retire a single one of them. He allowed a single to give the Royals the lead at 7-6 and allowed the next hitter, Brent Mayne, to all but finish the game with a 3 run shot to left on the very next pitch. Game over - and the Sox were off to an 0-3 start.
  • There was one bright offensive performance today by Jose Valentin and it was the only thing that kept the Sox in this game. Valentin went 3 for 4 with 2 HR's and a triple, driving in 4 of the Sox 6 runs. If it wasn't for Valentin, this game wouldn't have been close.
  • At this point it seems as if Paul Konerko (.091) and Carlos Lee (.111) couldn't hit a pitch off of your's truly. Each have only 1 hit on the season. In fact the 3-7 hitters are a combined 6/39 at the plate. Not going to win many games unless those guys step it up. It isn't looking too good right now, Sox fans.
  • The Sox open the home portion of their schedule tomorrow at 3:05 CST against the Detroit Tigers. New White Sox starter Esteban Loaiza takes his shot at getting a win for the Sox against the equally bad 0-3 Tigers who have scored only 2 runs in their first 3 games. If the Sox can't beat the Tigers at home, then we are in for a long season Sox fans.

Tinkerer Update:
Rios starts in CF. 3 lineups in 3 days for the Sox.
