WSI News - Totally Biased Game Recaps

Opening Day Blues...

March 31st at Kansas City

Today's temperature:
"It's only April and it was only the first game of the season, but the Sox will have to show more life than that if Uncle Jerry wants to keep his job."

Short Take:  Sox bats don't show up against the lousy Royals.

  • The White Sox bats didn't bother to show up for this game as the Royals shut them out 3-0 in a game that the Royals controlled from the beginning to the end. Runelvys Hernandez dominated Sox hitters for 6 strong innings as he only allowed 2 hits and 1 walk. The Royals bullpen took over from there as Jason Grimsley and Mike MacDougal closed it for a Royals win.
  • I guess Opening Day isn't too soon to begin playing corpseball. But cheer up Sox fans. Remember it is only Opening Day.
  • Mark Buehrle started off shaky allowing 2 runs in the 2nd inning on 3 hits, a walk, and a sacrifice fly but was helped out
  • by Aaron Rowand, D'Angelo Jimenez, and Sandy Alomar Jr. on a perfectly executed relay to throw out Angel Berroa at home and end the inning. He then pitched around an error by Jose Valentin to start the 3rd, allowing no runs and kept the damage to a minimum for 7 innings.
  • The Sox could only manage 3 hits in the game. Those hits coming off the bats of Frank Thomas, Magglio Ordonez, and Joe Crede. Thomas also walked twice and was really the only Sox player that had a positive offensive performance today.
  • In his White Sox debut, Tom "Flash" Gordon allowed 1 run in 1 inning due to a wild pitch and a passed ball that followed a leadoff double.
  • Some of the lone highlights of this game for the Sox came on defense with the exception of Jose Valentin's error. Rowand made a nice jumping catch in the outfield as well as picking up an assist on the relay. Paul Konerko made a nice play at first on a Carlos Febles bunt where he fielded the ball and dove to tag Febles before he touched first. You know the game was bad when the Sox defense provided the highlights.
  • The Sox have an off day tomorrow and resume their series against the Royals at 1:05 CST on Wednesday. Jeremy Affeldt is scheduled to start for the Royals and Bartolo Colon will make his debut in a White Sox uniform. Let's hope the Sox bring their bats and provide Colon with some run support.

Tinkerer Update:
Hey, It's only Opening Day. Still 161 more chances to tinker.
