No News is Good News!

Assorted thoughts from another week with no news from the Sox….

The old adage states that “No news is good news.”  This is especially true these days for the Sox.  After all, when Prof. Chaos is at the helm, there’s no telling what disaster will befall the club.

Of course, it’s also true that the professor likes to keep absolute secrecy about prospective deals.  This means that there could be a disaster in the works just waiting to be sprung on unsuspecting fans.

After all, who would have thought that the Sox would have to pay the A’s to take Ray Durham last summer and receive a mediocre AAA pitcher in return.  Who would have thought that Todd Ritchie was worth three pitchers?  Had anyone known about these deals before they were sprung on us, odds are that fans would have been in an uproar.

It’s better to keep quiet about these things, lest the negativity from the fans stifle the PR juggernaut that is the Sox organization.

Well, you can’t really say there was no news this past week.  After all, Kelly Wunsch was re-signed.  Along with the signings of Paul Konerko and Mark Johnson, the Sox have all but kept the Cubs from making any news since the World Series.

The Sox say they need to address starting pitching, but they also seem to be set on cutting payroll in a year when season ticket sales should go up due to the All-Star Game coming to Comiskey Park in July.

Look for the Sox not to sign a Glavine, Maddux, or even a Moyer (although at age 40, he’s the perfect type of player for Prof. Chaos to hang his hopes on).  Instead look at them to re-sign Todd Ritchie and hope that last year’s disaster was a fluke.  Look for the Sox to get burned.

Occasionally rumors pop up among Sox fans that Keith Foulke is about to be traded.  This makes perfect sense, considering the cost-cutting mode the Sox are in.  For some reason, Foulke seems to have rubbed someone the wrong way, too.  How else can you explain why he was kept out of the closer’s role even after it was obvious to everyone that he’d regained control of his change-up and was mowing everyone down in the limited role to which he was assigned?

The Sox usually don’t like to pay people who are in the doghouse, so a trade to get rid of Foulke isn’t the least likely thing that could happen in the next few weeks.

So far, though, nothing huge has happened with the Sox.  And that’s a good thing.

Let the Cubs get their headlines with the meaningless signing of a manager who will learn the first day of spring training that he is a figure-head and that the person who really runs the Cubs on the field is Sammy Sosa.

For Sox fans, all is well.  Prof. Chaos sleeps.

Editor's Note: Hal Vickery has been a White Sox fan since 1955 when he was five years old. For much of that time he also had a secondary rooting interest in the Cubs, which he has shown the good sense to abandon. When not cheering for or writing about the Sox, Hal teachers chemistry and physics at North Boone High School, in Poplar Grove, IL.
