Mariners take advantage of errors

March 11th, from

Freddy Garcia retired the first nine batters he faced and allowed just one hit in four innings as the Seattle Mariners held off the Chicago White Sox, 7-5, Monday at Tucson Electric Park.

Mark Cameron's first-inning homer off Sox starter Lorenzo Barcelo put the Mariners in front. They made it 3-0 in the third when Ichiro Suzuki and Mark McLemore hit back-to-back doubles, and Edgar Martinez followed one batter later with an RBI single.

The Sox were held to just a solo homer by Kenny Lofton until a four-run ninth inning made it close. Aaron Rowand had a two-run homer and Mark Johnson added a two-run single.

White Sox watch: Magglio Ordonez made a sweet, sliding catch of a Ruben Sierra line drive. ... Frank Thomas saw that Garcia wasn't paying attention to him after a fourth-inning walk and stole second without a throw. He was later thrown out at home by Mike Cameron trying to score from second on a Carlos Lee single. ... Kelly Wunsch gave up a walk and an unearned run as he threw a hitless inning in his Cactus League debut. ... Catcher Miguel Olivo left the game in the eighth inning with a twisted knee. ... Barcelo's bid for a spot in the rotation continued to fade as he allowed three runs and four hits in three innings without a strikeout.
