Buehrle wins #18!

September 17 vs. Kansas City

Totally Biased
Series Update

Short Take:  Omigod, was that Keith Foulke getting a save?!

  • What can be more meaningless than a late-season game between the White Sox and Kansas City Royals?  A competition between owners to see who can cut payroll the lowest and collect the biggest baseball welfare check next year?  Mark Buehrle makes this game at least worth watching, winning his 18th game and leading the Sox to a 6-1 victory.
  • Buehrle made one mistake all night, a gopher pitch to Mike Sweeney in the fourth.  His teammates got it back for him the next half-inning and Buehrle would have no trouble keeping his foot on KC's throat the rest of the night.
  • A leadoff walk by Frank Thomas in the fifth, followed by a stolen base (!) led to an rbi for Jeff Liefer on a single.  The Sox took the lead 5-4.
  • Frank Thomas and Magglio Ordonez went back-to-back deep into the left field seats in the seventh inning.  Fans were thrilled to watch each of them land deep into the outfield upper deck of New Comiskey... oops... New Comiskey doesn't have an outfield upper deck.  Nevermind.
  • Mark Johnson homered and Frank Thomas scored on a double by Magglio Ordonez in the eighth.  Isn't it just amazing how important it is to score runs late in the game?  With this outfit we couldn't beg for one, May-July.
  • Sox Fans were all misty-eyed with nostalgia when Jerry "the Tinkerer" Manuel left some long-forgotten pitcher, number 29, stay in to pitch the ninth inning and get the save.  Yes, that was Keith Foulke out there picking up his first save since June.  The Tinkerer threw the ex-closer a bone.  Chances are he'll never leave the doghouse.
  • The Sox are one game beneath .500.  It was June 20 the last time they were officially mediocre.  .

Tinkerer Update:
Jimenez back to 2B,  Liefer at 1B.  Play Olivo?  Why do something like that?

Mark Buehrle

Seven innings holding KC to just one run.  3 strikeouts against 1 walk, Mark made just one mistake, a solo dinger to Sweeney.  Earned his 18th win.
