Rauch impressive in 9-5

March 9th, from MLB.com

Ray Durham, Jose Valentin and Paul Konerko each had three hits as the White Sox used an 18-hit attack to beat the Rockies, 9-5, on Saturday afternoon

After Jim Parque gave up a two-run homer to Todd Helton in the top of the first, the Sox singled in their first four at-bats off Jason Jennings, whom the Rockies expect to contend for the starting spot vacated when Scott Elarton (shoulder) was lost for the season.

Jennings walked three and gave up seven hits and five runs in 1 2/3 innings. After Matt Whiteside relieved Jennings and allowed five hits and four runs in 1 1/3 innings, Brian Fuentes, Justin Speier, Colin Young and Todd Belitz combined to shut out the Sox the rest of the way.

Parque -- who yielded two earned runs on seven hits in three innings -- is still working on raising his velocity, which topped out in the mid-80's, about 5 miles per hour below what it was before undergoing shoulder surgery last season.

Coming off a poor first outing earier in the week, Jon Rauch allowed a run and three hits in three impressive innings to become a candidate -- along with Dan Wright, Lorenzo Barcelo and Gary Glover -- for the fifth spot in the Sox's starting rotation.

"His name has to be back in the mix," Manager Jerry Manuel said
